Everything was calm again. Ann was getting over Lena, Rin and Vanessa had really hit it off, and of course I had Smii7y with me. As winter came and the weather got colder, holidays were coming up quickly, and also finals. All of us in the house worked hard, and time went by quickly. Before I knew it, the semester was over and it was winter break.

I had one last day with my three best friends before over a month apart and we were dedicated to making it a great day.

We wanted to chill in our shared house, playing games and bingeing movies. After watching all four Hunger Games movies, Rin decided we needed to play Cards Against Humanity. We didn't have the game, but our university book store rented games out to students.

"Are you sure, Rin?" Ann asked. "It's starting to get dark outside." As it was winter in Maine, it was also starting to get pretty cold, plus going out alone at night was never the best idea.

"I'll go with her," Smii7y offered with a smile. I gave him a smile back and Rin thanked him. They geared up in the proper attire, Smii7y kissing me on the head before opening the door to leave. As they left the sun had almost completely fallen.

"We should make a fort," Ann said eyeing up the couch cushions.

"That's the best idea I've heard all day."

We spent the next 15 minutes stacking cushions, propping up blankets, and laughing when everything kept falling, but finally we had finished our fort.

"Rin and Smii7y should be back by now, don't you think?" Ann asked looking at the time.

"Eh, it probably takes just 20 minutes to walk there and back, much less check out a game." Ann answered with a quiet nod. We decided to start on some snacks with the time we had left. I was on bowl and cup filling duty with my limited kitchen skills, while Ann cut up some fruits and vegetables to plate.

"Okay, don't you think they should be back-" Ann started to say, but she was cut off by the sound of sirens coming closer. We both walked to the window, as the flashing lights approached. At the end of the road, ambulances and police cars stopped, but we were too far away to see any reason why.

"Well they'll have to go around all the vehicles, so they still might now be here for a while," I said to Ann who had gone completely silent.

"What if that is them?" Ann said. At first I didn't know what she meant but as soon as the realization hit me, my mind was racing. In a moment of panic, both Ann and I raced to grab our jackets and we ran out the door towards the flashing lights.

As we got closer, a police officer walked over to us, managing to stop Ann and telling her they needed space to work. He couldn't block me though.

There was a car, swerved off into the sidewalk. A few yards beyond where the car had stopped were two bodies, one was laying in the dirt, the other hunched over them. It was so dark that I couldn't make out their faces. What I could make out was the Cards Against Humanity box sitting only a few feet away from them.
