It isn't the getting to know someone,
That counts as getting to know who they are.
It's the getting to know who they are,
That that helps you understand why you wanted to get to know them.—————————————————————————————————————————————
Walking into the canteen filled with loud obnoxious chatter about, by what she had unintentionally overheard, mindless, brain numbing topics, she realised she hadn't really had a conversation with Noah that consisted of the usual 'getting to know each other' information, so as she sat down on a round table situated in the very back of the large space, crammed between many more identical ones.
Right next to a multitude of large windows, which seemed to stretch from floor to ceiling, when seated, however, she knew from her walk over there that it in fact had a metres distance away from and footwear she was sure had tried to take a wack at it in the past.
She heard the shout of "Alex!" Just above the unnerving clatter sounding through the room. She smirked at his try of shouting over the uncontrollable noise.
She didn't try to speak above everyone, so opted for the raise of her hand, back still facing away from everyone, hoping he would see her before she started to look insane holding her hand up like she was trying to do a witches spell.
At the sound of his voice coming from behind her, yelling "Hey kitten!" at the top of his lungs As he came around to sit in front of her, she dropped her hand, relieved that she could regain her posture as if she hadn't looked as though she was trying to create a hurricane in the air only moments ago.
He through his bag on top of the table directly in front of him in a dramatic instance that made it seem as though he was tired, even though he was his usual bubbly over enthusiastic self, while sliding a leg over the bench like seat at a time, finally settling down with his elbows perched upon the rounded tables edge, chin resting in his palms and weight slumped forward, leaning in so he could get a better hear of whatever his friend would say.
Alexandrine smirked. Her casual twitch on the left side of her mouth pulled up to create an uneven grin, and raising her right eyebrow to demonstrate her questioning manor
"kitten?"
"Yes kitten! It's perfect for you!" Noah exclaimed, however his loud voice still didn't cause any attention from surrounding tables, not able to completely overpower the noise. His posture had straightened up considerably in his excitement to explain the nickname he had spent the day thinking over. "Small, cute and cuddly." He continued with a fond teasing smile "but deadly when the claws come out!" The sinister tone he tried to apply to give his words more depth failed miserably in his own cute was.
"That's adorable and all, but I think your reasoning might be flawed." The amusement couldn't stay hidden as it poured through her words and she could stop the side the exhale of air through her nose which allowed as a substitute for her laugh.
"Oh really." He drew out his words "and why is that..." this time it was him that had attempted a smirk of his own, trying to mirror Alexandrines reaction.
"You see... I'm not 'cute'" she put extra enthuses around her last word as if she knew others had had the same idea and even the thought was humorous to her.
"I beg to differ." By now he had decided to change the subject. He had realised that his new friend was a rather secretive person, so,wine who clearly would rather keep to themselves. So far she had seemed willing to share with him, upon being asked to do so however, which he didn't mind - - he liked talking.
'Just not about him.'
"Hey, Alexandrine?" Although it was supposed to be the start of s conversation it was clear he had sent a silence question towards her without even trying. Noah was nervous, he hadn't had any friends in a while, not after what the last one did, not after what his "cousin" did. His nerves stemmed from a place of uncertainty, you had to be smart - - the top of the class, or rather the top of the state to even get considered as being worthy of having even a chance at getting into the school - - so to be unsure was a disappointing characteristic that made him feel almost unworthy of taking the position up when it could have been given to a more confident candidate then himself; the thought alone that alexandrine could possibly dismiss him like he had been before hurt, somewhere deep down inside of him, because he could only hope hat she was different.
"Wazz uuuuppppp!" She loudly whispered imitating a scene from her favourite horror movie, shaking her head violently from side to side with her tongue out while trying to hold her laugh in long enough to get to the end of her impression. Noah was instantly put at ease. How could he have thought anything different of her. All throughout class they had passed notes to each other curtesy of an A4 sheet of paper she had folded into an aeroplane, making fun of the teacher and passing judgement on students they had already encountered or just simply seen and not liked the faces of, he felt eyes burning into him from a direction he couldn't pinpoint but decided to ignore it on the grounds he had only just started there recently, after all, how couldn't someone have a valid reason to hate him to the extent he felt those eyes seemed to manifest in his mind?
After their laughter died down he managed out a rather breathless "as cliche as it sounds...how about 21 questions?"
"That's an amazing idea! I was just thinking about that!"
Noah started instantly asking things like her favourite colour; red and her favourite food; anything that doesn't involve long periods of preparation and cooking, to which she had him answer as well - - green and, as shyly as he admitted it he said he wasn't sure as he had never had anything besides a stew or on the rare occasion of a birthday a pie with mash.
Alexandrine started with questions about his interests; spongebob and hobbies; studying.
"How is studying a hobby!" She exclaimed, her voice cutting through everybody else, her exasperated tone caught everyone by surprise, it seemed and they all looked at her with pitying disgust.
"It's sad people judge others on their social and economical status."
"I'm sorry do you have any others! How else did any of the other scholarship students pass through their stupid testings!"
She was about to answer when she realised she couldn't without letting slip another lie, instead she choose to divert the conversation, once again feeling a foreign clenching in an organ she forgot she even had.
"That smells amazing! What is it!" He scratched the back of his neck in a gesture she only saw men do when they were trying to cover up their embarrassment.
"Last nights leftovers." He mumbled turning his gaze to a sudden spot of interest, conveniently exactly eye level, on the wall.
And like that they continued their questioning, getting to know eathother in a fashion that to anyone else that didn't know they had only met recently that they had been friends for years and were merely catching up
Leaving her apple at the bottom of her bag, not forgotten and not totally unwanted...
