"CAS!" I shouted across the dirty alley way, panic rising in my voice.
We were on a hunt in Springfield, Missouri. We had followed the djinn to a dirty, abandoned warehouse, which was unsurprising. This djinn seemed to be particularly powerful, giving us a run for our money. Sam and I were armed with silver blades dipped in lambs blood, and Cas with his typical angel blade. The djinn had somehow slipped past the angel's defences, laying his flaming hand on Cas's arm and causing him to collapse. He hit the ground with a smack, the djinn turning to face us now that the main threat had been eliminated. I was distracted by the slack look on Cas's face and didn't see the djinn approaching me.
I heard Sam yelling my name, but I couldn't look away from the crumpled figure on the wet pavement. Suddenly the blazing blue of the djinn caught my attention, he was only a foot away from me. I adjusted my grip on my knife, rage ripping through my chest. This son of a bitch was going to pay for that. Seeing the resolve in my eyes, the djinn paused his advances. Long enough for Sam to jump behind him and slam his blade through the glowing blue bastard's back. The djinn's scream turned into a choked gurgle as he slid to the ground, silver blade protruding from his back. I felt the knife fall from my hand as I ran for Cas.
"Cas? Cas!" I whimpered. "Wake up, you need to wake up." Nothing, no movement. His face still looked slack and lifeless.
"CAS!" I yelled this time, hoping to wake him. I shook him, hard. I pulled him into my lap, cradling his head. Sam was standing beside me, waiting for Cas to open his eyes. He laid limp in my arms.
"CASTIEL," I screamed in his face, making it a prayer in my head at the same time.
His eye lids fluttered open, revealing his bright blue eyes. I sighed in relief. "Oh thank god."
"Dean? But you- you were dead," he stammered, tears welling in his eyes.
The djinn must have shown him his worst fear instead of his deepest desires. Bastard, I thought again. I pulled him closer, trying to reassure him.
"It was just a dream Cas, it was just the djinn. I'm fine." I said quickly. I didn't like seeing that look on the angels face. Realization dawned on his face as he frantically searched for the creature around us. "Sam got him Cas, it's okay."
He relaxed back into my lap, laying there for a moment and closing his eyes. I held him a little tighter, letting him readjust. Sam had gone back over to the djinn, ensuring he was good and dead. He nodded to himself. Cas pushed himself up, and I rose to my feet. He tried to walk, but staggered into me instead. I quickly steadied him, and he slung his arm around my shoulders. I placed my arm around his waist and pulled him along beside me. Sam gathered our weapons and threw them into the trunk when we made it back to the Impala. I threw him the keys.
"Sam, you drive," I said, placing Cas in the back seat and sliding in beside him. He leaned into my side heavily as I put my arm around him, nuzzling into my neck.
"You okay there angel?" I asked, worry in my tone. Cas rarely looked so exhausted.
"My powers are a little drained after that djinn nightmare," he said quietly.
I looked down at him in alarm, "You'll be okay though, right?"
He smiled up at me tiredly, "I'm fine Dean, I just need some rest." I frowned at him.
"Like... sleep?" I asked, eyeing him uncertainly. "I thought you said you couldn't sleep."
"I said I didn't need to, not that I couldn't," he countered. "And yes, I mean sleep. I need sleep."
He grinned up at me sleepily and snuggled closer, shutting his eyes. His breaths grew slow and even. I held him a little tighter, studying Cas's sleep face, something I'd never seen before. Seeing that peaceful expression on the angels face... it looked right. He should be at peace all the time. I wish it was that easy. I gently placed a kiss on his raven hair. The drive back to the bunker wouldn't be too long this time, but letting Sam drive... it was going to feel awfully long for me. I hate not driving. I sighed, trying to shut my eyes and rest too.
