Bibi's POV.
Oxfordshire, United Kingdom.
A Month Later.
School has been nice, and Fayha and I are more than just friends; we've had sleepovers twice, once at their place and once at ours. And the other days I've visited their place, I've ignored Ayman because, why not? He also hasn't apologised, thus providing yet another reason for me to be cruel.I was walking down the stairs to get some lunch when I overheard Mama on the phone.
At first, I wasn't interested in what she was saying until she said, "But Bashir, I thought you spoke to the lawyer about Ahmad; that's why we left to give you time to gather more evidence without him coming in contact with Bibi. We are only buying time by being here."
That completely stopped me in my tracks.I know I shouldn't be listening, but this has to be about me and my so-called father.Yes, I spoke with Faiz; he still has the documents, and he said to scan them and send them to you after everything had been resolved with the lawyer." "We need to be fast, Bashir. At least this one time we are ahead of him. We can't waste this opportunity, and I can't have him finding out we're no longer in Nigeria. That's further risking our plan to have him where we want him." She emphasized.
So this must be the reason we had to move here so quickly, and whatever it is has to do with my father wanting to use me for something, I guess. Just as I turn to approach closer, Aunty Shafa grabs my arm."Kin chika son, gulma yarinyan nan." "You like too much gossip, this girl." She whispers, tugging me along with her, "Mai nayi, what did I do?" I ask, trying to appear innocent.
"Don't try to ask smart Bibi; I know you like the back of my hand." She warns, and I sigh. "It wasn't intentional. I was passing by when I heard her mention my name, so I stopped to hear what it was all about," I explain."And how are things going for you? She asks, raising her brow at me. I stay quiet. "Zauna, sit!" She instructs, and I quickly obey.
"You were eavesdropping, which is not proper; your mother has a right to privacy, and I'm sure you are aware of this. And what if you overheard her speak your name? She has the right to mention you and say whatever she wants about you, but it should not be your problem unless she involves you since she is your mother." She scolds.
"So, if you know what's best for you, refrain from telling your mother about what you've heard; when the time comes, she'll explain everything to you. So, for the time being, focus on your schoolwork, and whatever nice girls do, is that understood? She asks. "Yes, it is." I answer by nodding. "Now come and help me loosen my hair, Kinji,You hear."
She says she's taking off her headscarf to display her previous plaited hair. We talk about various topics, and I inform her of Leena's forthcoming wedding. We settle on clothes and plan to go on a date this weekend, just the two of us; it's been a long time since we did that.
Doesn't mean I'm going to just suddenly forget what I heard.
I'm just going to lay off for the time being. After finishing her hair, I return to my room to pray Asr before finally heading downstairs to eat. I eat some rice and fish with apple juice before returning to work on the assignment from my psychology 204 class. The man doesn't make light of his reports, so I need to come up with one and get it done by next week.
Mama joins me halfway through my research. "Bibi, are you going to school tomorrow?" She asks as she takes a seat on my bed. "No, I don't have school tomorrow; it is until Wednesday. I'm going out with Aunty Shafa tomorrow, though. Is there anything you want?" I ask her.
"Not really; there are some papers I want you to take to your uncle on your way back if possible." She says, and my mind instantly returns to her chat with Uncle Bashir. The urgent temptation to bring it up almost knocks me out of my chair, but I recall Aunty Shafa's warning and keep my mouth shut.
"Okay, no problem, just give them to me to keep so I don't forget." I say this to gauge her reaction. "I'll give them to you before you leave tomorrow. I have to finish getting everything together. I'm not yet done." She elaborates, and I nod. "Be sure to come down for dinner and stop eating in small quantities. I need you to be chubby." She jokes, "Mamaaa." I drag, and she laughs as she walks out, closing the door after her.
I finish my task, clean up my table, and pray Magrib before going down to eat. Aunty Shafa made her famous and most delicious tuwon shinkafa miyan wake, my favourite. I have two wraps on the spot and barely made it upstairs to take a bath. After my shower, I message Fayha and tell her that I'll be dropping by their house quickly tomorrow and that she should or must prepare some chocolate fudge for me.
Did I mention that this gal knows how to bake? This girl is an excellent baker, I tell you. Everything she makes is delicious and tempting. I pray I'sha and prepare for bed. After reading a few pages of the Quran, I decide to call it a night. I say my adhkar, turn out the lights, and fall asleep.
