Bibi's POV
Oxfordshire, United-kingdom.
As I'm sitting in my room watching this short drama series on YouTube mama walks into my room. "Assalamu Alaikum." She says upon her entry "Wa'alaikumus salam." I reply.
"Busy with school work?" She questions and i nod in the negative pausing the video. "Well i want to speak to you about something." She says taking a seat opposite me on the bed.
"Is something wrong?" I ask already feeling wary. "There's something wrong alright but I want you to listen to me first." She says and i nod for her to go on. "It's about why we moved here in the first place, it's because of your father." She confesses. "What does us moving here have to do with him?" I ask
"He's been after your custody since you turned eight, and he lost the case over and over and the main reason why we got divorced was because he was abusive hence the reason why I got custody of you aside from the fact that islamically I'm the one to have rightful custody of you." She goes on.
"And he started getting pretty persistent after his second wife passed away suddenly which we suspect he has a hand in somehow, he had three kids with her as you know, but getting them to confess to all that their father has done has been tough, which I believe is because he has brainwashed them into thinking he can never do anything wrong. And he was getting closer to finding a lawyer whom he can successfully bribe to win you over so we had to move here." She explains
"And prior to all this, my brothers have been the ones dealing with him hence the no contact with him over the years but recently they found out that he learnt about us moving here and my brothers have come up with a solution to deter this heist of his and that is to get you married." She says ever so casually like she didn't just say I was supposed to get married to stop my mad man of a father from coming after me.
"Why are you telling me all this now if as you say you're close to getting him where you want him and to hold him accountable for all he has done?" I ask her confused. "Because he seems to be up to something we are yet to uncover which could serve to surprise us and we don't want the carpet to be slipped from beneath us hence the decision made by your uncles to control any future damage." She explains.
"How soon should all this take place?" I ask "we want the knot to be tied like very soon because we need to have a marriage certificate we can use it against him in court." I sigh as the weight of all this begins to settle.
"But I don't have anyone in mind right now mama." I say "your uncles have found a solution to that and you know him, he's someone who will take care of you to the best of his abilities." She says "who is he, are we related?" I ask "yes, it's your cousin you're getting married to." She confesses.
"Kai mama gaskiya A'a, no mama please." I plead turning to look at her completely "which of them?" I question my heart felt like I was holding it in my hands waiting for the news to determine how I held onto it. "Ayman." She simply said. "Ayman! I gasped "haba mama, you all know what my relationship with him is like please anyone but him. Talk to them and tell them to give me time to find someone please." I plead.
"This wasn't my decision to make and some flimsy beef of yours isn't a valid reason enough worth bringing up to them as to why you don't want to marry this boy." Mama scolds standing up. "He is a good responsible boy who is capable of taking care of you." She adds
"Will I get a divorce after all this is over?" I question genuinely "keh, kina hauka neh? Are you crazy?" She yells and aunty shafa rushes in. "What happened?" She questions "you will marry this boy Bibi and you will be patient with whatever is to come and just so you know, he also didn't willingly agree to this kuma yache, and he said he's getting married again three months after you pending the girl agrees, it will be just you." She adds the last part as if all that should make me calm.
"Wallahi mama gaskiya bazai yiwu ba, there's no way I'm going to agree to this, how can I marry someone whom doesn't care about me and then he gives you all the condition of him marrying just three months after and you all say nothing. What about my own feelings do you want me to die of heartache neh or what." I exclaim
"If I were you I would shut up and thank God that someone has agreed to marry you with the said condition and within a short period of time." She states pointing a finger at me before heading for the door "and you better be ready because he will be coming to see you later and you have no excuse of not coming down to see him because I am warning you, you won't like what I will do to you if you prove to be stubborn." She yells before shutting the door leaving me with a pounding heart and a shocked aunty shafa.
I plop down on my bed and burst into tears aunty shafa settles beside me and gives me a hug I cry in her arms for what seems like hours and I don't know I've fallen asleep until I hear my phone buzz to life with the adhan for Magrib. I can't believe I slept that long.
I pad over to the toilet to perform wudhu and upon putting on my hijab I remember Ayman will be here anytime soon sighing I pray magrib and make du'a to Allah to provide me with the best of solutions to all these problems. After I'm done I fold back the rug and hijab and crawl back onto my bed not even hungry at all I think everything I learnt today is enough to keep me filled for the next three years.
Just as I'm finally beginning to doze off desperate for anything that will have me temporarily disconnected from my reality there's a knock on the door and I know exactly why the person is knocking already. "I'll be down in a few minutes." I yell and the person thankfully walks away. Let's get this over with.
I put on a one piece jilbab and go down and there he is as arrogant as he'll ever be seated like he owns the house. I clear my throat to inform him of my presence and he casually looks up from his phone only to acknowledge me before going back to what he was previously doing.
Choosing to ignore the look he gave me I took a seat at the far end and opposite to him we sit in silence for almost ten minutes before he finally clears his throat. "I'm sure your mother has told you everything you need to know about why this marriage is taking place because otherwise I'd rather die single and childless than marry you and let this be clear we will only be married on paper do you hear me. And I'll be getting married to my girlfriend three months after this and I don't want you causing her any troubles." He says at a go.
Too shocked by his audacity to think this much of himself I kiss my teeth, frustrated by everything going on and the fact that I can't slap the disgust I feel towards him"the feeling of hatred is beyond mutual mr lover boy if I were you, I wouldn't get so ahead of myself thinking I'm one bit bothered by what goes on in your life however you chose to live it is your business and not mine so keep that arrogance of yours in check, be on your way and be a good boy tell your family members I say hi." I say standing up and going back to my room leaving him to whatever makes him sleep at night.
Since this is how they all want it to be then so be it. Let the games begin. I hear Mama go down to meet him and she says there for atleast thirty minutes before I hear the sound of his car roaring to life and leaving our neighborhood. I immediately settle in bed making a mental note to call my friends to inform them of my predicament.
I place my head on the pillow welcoming the stress induced sleep gladly embracing the sleep with open arms.
