Zoey:

I was dreading the day, because school was coming back and people would know about my mother's death as sure as they'd know that it was Friday.

I sighed and pulled open the door, walking outside into my yard. It was starting to get cold with the hint of winter chill as October gave its goodbye.

"Can I give you a ride?"

I jumped and whirled around, seeing Max smiling cockily from the steps on the porch.

"Don't scare me like that, with everything that happened," I said, gesturing back towards the house.

"I didn't mean to," he said, opening the passenger side door for me. I slid in and he closed it, walking around the front of the car and climbing in the driver's seat.

"Today is going to be a good day," he said, smiling as he pulled out of the driveway and started down the road towards school.

"Why?" I asked, stretching out in the seat.

"Because we're going to make it official to the rest of the school that you're my girlfriend," Max said, smirking.

"What?!" I coughed.

"You're going to hold my hand when we walk in school, don't make me beg," he said, looking at me with his green eyes. I blushed and looked out the window, "Fine."

" 'atta girl," He said.

"Don't push your luck," I said.

"Oops, sorry," he said, imitating that he was zipping his lips and he kept driving.

We pulled into the car parking lot and we headed towards the school. As promised, right as we entered the main doors, Max slipped his hand into mine and squeezed softly. My heart fluttered softly as I remembered where that grip had been only a couple hours ago.

Everyone in school seemed to stop and stare. The freakazoid of the school was with the new hot kid and it seemed to blow their minds.

"Nervous?" Max asked, bringing me out of my inner train of thoughts.

"Why do you ask?" I said as we started for first period.

"Because your hand is trembling so bad that I'm worried you're going to have a seizure," Max said.

I rolled my eyes, "I'm not having a seizure."

"Good, I was worried there were strobe lights somewhere," Max said, looking around him cautiously.

I face palmed and he smirked. I realized then that we were standing before the door to my first period, and my heart ached, realizing that we had to seperate until fourth period.

"I already miss you," Max said, frowning.

Then, he leaned down and kissed me softly. Each of the gawking students around us gasped as he pulled away, smiled, and said, "see you at lunch."
