"So, Evelyn, where do you come from?" Mrs. Medley asks kindly as I stand, frozen in the front of the room. Brianna is staring evilly at me like she was trying to kill me with her eyes. It was working.
"Um, North Carolina," I gulp. Someone wolf whistles. What? This was horrifying!
"North Carolina, huh?" Mrs. Medley says. "My, I love that place. Why did you move?"
"Uh, my dad had a new job here," I answer quietly. Don't ask what job, don't ask what job!
"What job?"
"Lawyer."
Some people clap like they actually mean it. Hmm, maybe kids here would actually appreciate my existence here. Brianna is one who doesn't clap. She glares. I gulp.
"So, Evelyn," Mrs. Medley pries. "Tell us a little about yourself." NO!!!
"Well, my name is Evelyn Thorn, I have an older brother named Keith, and uh. . ." I stammer.
"How old is your brother?" Calls some random girl I think is Cristina from the bunch of students on the right of me.
I did not expect this question. "Um, he's seventeen,"
Some girls look interested. Including Brianna. What? Brianna? No WAY I was letting her seduce Keith.
"Does he look like you?" Another girl asks. "Cause if he does, I'm interested."
What the fuck? Did she just hint she thought I was pretty? Wow, this was going well. Hehehe.
"Now, now, class," Mrs. Medley shushes us. "Let Evelyn speak." No, I didn't wanna speak, Medley.
"Go on, Evelyn."
"Uh, what do I say?" I ask stupidly. This gets a giggle throughout the class. I blush.
"What are your hobbies?" Mrs. Medley suggests, obviously trying to help my sorry ass out.
"Well, I don't really do much, but-" I start, but I'm interrupted by the roar of the classes' laughter. Darn. Why did I fucking have to say that?
Even Mrs. Medley looks amused by what I said. "Oh, really? I bet you do SOMETHING," she says. No, actually, I don't.
"Er, basically, I sing and dance, but that's it," I shrug, trying and failing to look nonchalant. I hear someone snort, and some others go, "ooh!".
I turn my head to see who just did that. "What?" I ask.
I see Brianna fuming at me from the right. Some other girls from all around the room look amused, scared, worried, and challenging.
"So you sing, huh? Well, I-" Brianna starts, but sees Mrs. Medley staring at her meanly, so she changes course and says instead, "My, Evelyn! You must be so talented! I would like to hear you sometime." She sounds like she just ate a bowl full of sugar. Ooh, this was BAD, BAD, BAD.
After two more minutes of talking bout myself, I head back to my seat, glancing at Brianna as I go along. What was she going to say? Her voice echoes in my head.
"So you sing, huh? Well, I-" Well I what?
I plop down in my chair, feeling like I just ran three miles. I'm even panting. Why the hell was I doing that?
The auburn haired girl I forgot the name of turns her head to face me when I sit down.
"Hey, Evelyn, right?" the girl asks. Duh, I was Evelyn.
"Uh, yeah, that's me," I answer back dumbly. Ew. I didn't usually talk like that. But I didn't usually have people talk to me.
"Hi, Evelyn, in Gretchen. Gretchen Arders.Welcome to Centralfare High," Gretchen greets cheerfully. She pushes the glasses up her nose and smiles. I like her immediately.
"Hi," I say quietly. "And thanks."
"Lemme introduce everyone here," says Gretchen. "This is Rebecca." She gestures to the pale girl. Rebecca nods.
"This is Sarah," she points to the gum girl. Sarah yawns. Ok, then.
"This is Thomas," she nods toward the mousey kid. Thomas smiles big.
"Hi! You can call me Tom!" Tom chirps eagerly. He seems nice.
"And he is Jake," Gretchen looks at the sort of handsome person. She looks kind of dreamy. Hmm, I suspect she likes him. Oh, young love. Like me and Harry! Jake grins at me and goes back to drawing something I can't see.
The bell rings and everyone stands up in unison. Mrs. Medley is saying bye to people leaving really fast.
Jake turns to Gretchen, who looks faint.
"Do we have homework today?" He asks boredly.
"Ung, I don't think, um, doe, I mean so," Gretchen blushes. Jake shrugs and leaves.
Gretchen looks at me and signs.
"He's so hot," she breaths. "So, what do you have next?"
I check my schedule. "Uh, social studies,"
"Hey, me too! Whom with?"
"Mr. Hammond,"
"Yay! We're in the same class! Sit next to me, k?"
I nod, because I'm in desperate need for a friend. And Gretchen seems nice anyway.
We walk out the door together, but when we enter the hallway, Jackie and Meredith are blocking our way. And guess who's with them? Yup, that's right.
Brianna Stai.
