It's Friday. Finally. I finally finished my first week of school. Yes! I can spend the weekend chillaxing.

"So!" Gretchen says, popping up behind me. "You survived one week of a new school!" She slaps my back.

It had been a very tiring week. I am the new buzz from the raping thing, and suddenly became boosted in popularity. But I won't ditch Gretchen. She is my first best friend, and I want to show her how much that means to me.

Another thing that happened over the week as Alice. She keeps staring at me in this weird way that I can't explain. Soft and gentle. Loving, even. It's like she's my mom looking over her child or something.

"Well?" Gretchen asks impatiently, breaking my thinking.

"What?"

"How was the week?"

"It was. . .eventful," I answer. "Tiring. Exhausting. Busy."

Gretchen nods.

"I believe you," she says. "I heard what happened. Omigod, what was it like?"

"What was what like?" I asks, tossing some random notebooks into my book bag.

"The raping! Duh!"

"Uhh," I stammer uncomfortably. "I'd rather not discuss it, if you know what I mean."

"Oh! I totally understand," Gretchen nods so hard her two pigtails jangle around. "I wouldn't wanna talk about it either."

I roll my eyes. She is so weird sometimes. "Ya wanna go to my place?" I ask.

"Ok!"

We grab our stuff and head out the door, chatting about random things like boys and schoolwork and bands and stuff.

"Hey, Evelyn," a voice calls and someone touches my shoulder. I swing around. Byron.

"Oh! Uh, hi, Byron," I say. "H-how are y-you today?" There goes the stutter.

"Hello, Byron." Gretchen glares at him. "How was your day?"

Byron smiles weakly at Gretchen, then turns back to me. "So. Evelyn. Can we, ya know, talk in private?" My jaw drops. PRIVATE?!

"Uh, um, sure," I stammer nervously. Gretchen frowns and me and mouths, 'He's totally gonna ask you out. Say no,' then turns and starts talking to some random girl I know as Bekka.

Byron motions for me to follow him then leads me to the back of the school.

"Ok, Evelyn. I know we only met but. . . I was really wondering if we could, you know, maybe hang sometime? How's Saturday for you?" What. The. Fuck.

"Oh! I mean, I could, but. . . I, uh, maybe I could pull. . . You know, I maybe. . . YES!! I would love to!" I squeal very unattractively. I cringe. "I mean, sure. Whatever."

Byron grins. "Sweet. Ok, pick you up at 7 tomorrow? We'll go to my place."

"Ok!" I say, giving him my address and number on a piece of loose leaf. "Here ya go."

"Thanks." Byron nods and takes the paper. "See ya tomorrow." I wave weakly. I turn around to go back to Gretchen, and I spot Alice. She is standing not far away, staring at me. I can tell she heard every word. She is shaking her head slowly at me, like she's warning me not to date him. Then she turns and walks back into the school.

The second she leaves, Gretchen comes running up to me. "Did he ask you out? Did you say no?"

"Yes, he did ask me out. And I said yes." I say. She can't control my love life!

"Omg, Evelyn! You can't! Ditch him!! Just please don't go out with him!!" Gretchen begs. "Please!"

"Why not?" I challenge. "I like him, and he likes me back. We're an item!"

"He's a big fat jerk!" Gretchen argues. "He just wants to get into your pants! Then he'll dump you like all the other girls!"

"What other girls?" I ask, crossing my arms.

"Hmm, how 'bout Rebecca, Laura, Claudine, Claire, Mackenzie, Frankie, Lilly, or Mason? Or possibly Cleo or Emma? Oh, maybe-"

"Shut up!" I screamed. "You're just making all those names up. Byron's not like that."

"Oh, yes he is."

"What's with the Mason? He's not gay!"

"No, no he's not. Byron will do it with anything that moves: girl or guy."

"Good bye, Gretchen!" I snap. "Never mind about coming to my place." Gretchen scowls.

"Fine!" she says, stomping off. "Just don't come crying for me when he breaks your heart!" Then she's gone.

I growl in anger. Byron is a perfectly good person! He's not like that! Gretchen's just jealous that I get a hot guy.

I turn and begin to walk home. I try to block Gretchen and Alice out of my head. They had both shown signs of warning me about Byron. Could the things Gretchen said about Byron be true? No, they couldn't.

How wrong I was.
