''We're almost there! After we go throughout this tunnel, we will officially be there!" My mom trills.

I look ahead of us, hoping to see something good. What I see is a bright yellow tunnel that stretched on so I can't see the end.

"Awesome! I wanna go through that tunnel!" Says Keith excitedly. I do not.

"Why?!?!?!? Why do we have to move?!?!?" I wail. "It was fine back in North Carolina!"

Everyone ignores me, which really pisses me off.

We are nearing the big yellow tunnel. When our car is a mere two inches from it, Keith screams,"And into a new world!!" I think that is very immature of him.

Then our car goes into the tunnel. I hold my breath, kind of expecting it to cave in on us. I plan to hold my breath until we get out. It fails.

I never in my life saw a tunnel this long. It seems to stretch on for miles! I gasp for breath in a minute. I breath hard, but quietly so no one will hear me.

"Why is this tunnel so long?" I complain.

"I think it goes under a river or something," Mom says, shrugging. "You have to ask someone in New York."

"Ahhh, there's the sunlight," Dad says. "Woah, I can see buildings, really tall buildings!!!!''

I wait for our car to emerge from the tunnel, expecting something boring and short, like North Carolina. I like boring and short.

But no, when our car got out of the tunnel, I almost die of shock.

I see buildings, lots and lots and lots and lots of GINORMOUS, TOWERING, SKY HIGH, BEAUTIFUL IN THE SHIMMERING SUNLIGHT buildings.

"Oh my God," I breath.

"Holy shit," says Keith. "Holy shitoggi mushrooms."

I stare at the buildings, transfixed.

"Soooo, how do ya like it?"asks Dad.

"It's...it's.....it's beautiful!" I gasp.

"I knew you'd think so," says Mom triumphantly.

"And guess what? It's even more beautiful at night! Can you believe it?" Dad says in awe.

"Too bad school starts in three days, I would like to be able to explore!" Says Keith.

I frown. I forgot all about school. Which was weird, because that was the thing I was most worried about. Three days?!? All we would be doing was unpacking and going school supply shopping.

I stare as we pass a building with a huge hand on it, a giant Bloomingdales (I shriek at that one and beg Mom to take me there sometime. She says ok), a big park apparently called Central Park, and lots of other buildings.

"Someday we'll see the Empire State Building." Says Mom. "It's magnificent!"

I'd seen the Empire State Building in pictures and movies, but never in real life. It was gorgeous in the pics, so it must be something totally more shocking in reality.

We wind through the city, looking for our new home. I am excited now, since I saw the buildings. If this was the main place, what the hell did a house look like?

They must be fucking awesome if this is a main place to go. I think.

NOT.

I am sitting up straight as a pole now, wanting to see the house. What I see instead is something horrible.

"What?!?!" Keith and I scream at the same time.

"This is no house!" I yell. "This is a bunch of boxes!"

It did look like a bunch of boxes. What it really is is a small apartment building that was dirty and the paint was coming off. There are shabby little windows on each floor, and I can't even see a curtain, it is so dirty.

There was one door that looks like it hasn't been used in centuries. I couldn't see inside.

"What the hell is this?!" Keith screams. "We are going to live HERE!?!!?!?!?!?!?"

"Yes, yes we are," Mom says, unfazed. "Or you can live out on the street."

I groan, very very annoyed and shocked.

We get out of the car and a guy comes out with one of those bag loading things. He starts helping us load it.

"Where's our other stuff?" I ask, worried. Did we leave it behind?

"The moving track is coming, sweetie," Mom says. "They're just a little slow today."

I look at the loader guy for the first time and inwardly gasp my head off.

He is a young man, about my age. He has sandy blonde hair, shockingly bright blue eyes, and a tan. He has a strong and fit looking body, probably from lugging luggage around all the time. In littler words, he is kinda hot. Not really, but, you know, handsome. I wonder why such a nice young man who is kinda hot is doing luggage duty for a crummy apartment.

He is talking to my dad. Apparently Dad said something funny, because he laughs, and I can see bright white teeth. The dude looks over at the luggage and says something. I tear my eyes away and try to smooth my hair and get the wrinkles out of my shirt.

Keith is playing with his DS, but he looks up and sees me pushing my hair down. "Whatcha doing?" He asks.

I ignore him and continue smoothing my hair. I quickly look at the hottie to make sure he's not looking at me. Keith follows my gaze and grins.

"Ooh! Evelyn has a crush!" He sings.

"Shut it!" I say.

"You like a luggage man?"Keith teases." That's so lame."

"Shut the fuck up!" I hiss angrily.

I watch as Keith saunters over to the dude and starts taking to him. The guy smiles.

I smooth my hair one last time and walk over to the door because Mom beckoned me. The guy has eye contact with me and smiles widely, showing off his white teeth. I duck my head, embarrassed. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Keith grinning. Keith Thorn must die.

I take a deep breath and step into the apartment.
