"That.....was.......DELICIOUS!!!!!!" Keith screams as we walk out of the restaurant. I roll my eyes and sip from a bottle of water my mom had bought at the vending machine.
I personally really hated that lunch we just had. My mouth was on fire from the buffalo wings I had accidentally ordered. Don't ask.
I open my door to the tiny Mercedes and squish myself in. Keith is burping and stuffing himself in also. Yuck.
I plop down on my seat and immediately pick up my iPod.
"Honey! No iPod. If you use that thing too much, I'm going to take it away from you," Mom warns. "I bought that so you could listen to your favorite band, but now it's becoming out of control."
"Mom! I have to have this at all times 'cuz anything I do these days is SO BORING." I argue. Keith snorts.
"Yeah, right," he says, obviously taking Mom's side. "I have lots of stuff to do, like sports and school and music and ummmm other stuff like that."
Mom smiles at him thankfully. "Your brother's right. He participates in lots of things, and you never signed up for sports or any other activity."
Something pangs inside of me. I do know what I want to do with my life. I know what it is. I want to sing.
I've always wanted to become a singer, ever since I was a baby. I never told anybody this dream, since it was really embarrassing. But I sang anytime I could. Except when other people were around.
I sing in the shower, in my dancing hour, in the car silently, in a party when there so much other notice no one else can hear me, in the backyard, and when I'm babysitting or home alone.
I take a long gulp from my water bottle and stare at Keith and my mother. They had no idea.
"Um, actually, I did once, Mom." I say. "Remember that time when I signed up for tennis?"
"Yes, I do. And you were no good at it and couldn't even hold the racket well? Oh, f course I remember!" Mom gushes.
Keith frowns. "That doesn't count! You didn't even do anything!''
Dad puts the car in Drive and goes onto the parkway.
"And we're off!'' He says happily. "To a brand new life!"
Yes, yes, a brand new life indeed. I think.
I put the earplugs into the iPod, ignoring my mom. I scroll down the list. I choose I Want.
'Give ya this, give ya that, blow a kiss, take it back, if I look inside your brain...' Sings Harry.
I watch as DAVE'S BBQ gets farther and farther away. Soon enough, it disappears into the distance.
Just like me.
