Evelyn leaned against the front of her stepfather's car watching the sunny field out in front of her. She could feel the skin on her cheeks burning from the sun, but she was too deep in her thoughts to care. In a few hours she was going to leave her home in Phoenix to join her father in Forks, Washington.
"You alright Evy?" her stepfather said causing her to look back. She was happy for Phil and her mother, Renee. His baseball career was the reason she had to leave; her mother and him were going on the road to go live in Jacksonville, Florida.
"Yea" she said with a small voice "It's been years since I've seen my father. It's gonna be nice."
Phil gave her a small smile and turned to my mom and my sister, Bella, who were hugging, "Guys, come on. I love you both but we gotta a plane to catch"
Bella and Renee joined Evy in the car. Bella turned her head towards Evelyn and gave her a small smile. She returned the smile and then turns her head towards the window and puts her headphones in. The car ride to the airport was silent and then the plane ride was the exact same. To be honest Evelyn didn't expect anything more from Bella; she barely said anything on a regular day. She got that trait from their dad, Charlie. Evelyn came out like her mother; she was more social would rather be outside than be stuck in her room. But when she was stuck in her room, she was most likely drawing.
"Bella, Evy, over here" Charlie said over the small crowd. Evelyn spotted Charlie, still in his police uniform. She smiled and sped walked to her dad and hugged him. "Look at you all grown up" he smiled as he wrapped his arm around her.
"Nice to see you Charlie" Bella said as they separated from the hug. Charlie's face fell as his first name came out his daughter's mouth.
Evelyn felt a little tension, " So how far is Forks" she said trying to relieve the awkwardness and tension.
"A couple of hours. Come on" Charlie said as he snapped out of his frozen state.
The car drive to Forks was extremely awkward and silent. Once they entered the town, Evelyn observed the surroundings and saw that Forks wasn't really a modern town. There were worn down buildings all around.
"Your hair's longer" Charlie tried to start a conversation
"I cut it since the last time I saw you" Bella said as she played with the ends of her hair. Evelyn cringed at the fact that Bella managed to make the conversation more awkward than it had to be.
"Oh, I guess it grew out again" Charlie replied. The car ride went back to silent and awkward until they arrived at the house.
When they pulled up to the house, as soon as the car came to a complete stop, Evelyn unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car. She stared at the house in front of her and smiled at the memories that came to her head about the house. As those memories came to her, she started to feel more comfortable with the idea of living there. Their father guided them to their rooms that were on opposite sides of the hall. Evelyn opened her room door and observed the bareness of it. She started to think about the different things she could put in there to customize it.
"I'll let you guys get unpacked" Charlie said from the hallway and then walked down the stairs.
Evelyn grabbed her bag and started taking out her clothes to organize and put away. Evelyn was in the middle of putting some of the clothes in her drawers when she heard a car honk from the front of the house.
Evelyn put the clothes in her drawer and approached Bella's room. She saw Bella looking out the window "Who is it?"
Startled Bella replies with an I don't know. Evelyn rushed down the stairs, her short brown hair flowing behind her ears. She opens the door to see Charlie talking to a man in a wheelchair and boy that looks to be her age.
"Ah the girls of the hour" the man says as he looks at Evelyn and Bella.
Charlie turns towards the girls," Girls, you remember Billy Black"
"Yea. Wow you're lookin good" Bella speaks up first
"Still dancing" he replies with a smile
"God I remember being at the reservation all the time with you" Evy says with a smile.
Billy grins, "You were always the little troublemaker"
Evelyn lightly laughs, "I still am"
Billy gave another grin, " I'm glad you guys are here, Charlie here hasn't shut up since you told him you were coming"
Charlie rolls his eyes " Alright, keep exaggerating and I'll roll you in the mud"
"Right after ram you in the ankle" Billy says chasing after Charlie
Jacob, Bella, and Evy watch their fathers with laughs.
"Hi, I'm Jacob. We used to make mud pies when we were little" Jacob introduces himself
"Right. No, I remember." Bella mumbles with an awkward smile
Evelyn laughs and Jacob turns to her, "We used to runaround the beach together." Evelyn says with a smile.
Jacob chuckles, "Yea, we always ended up with sand in our hair" they both laughed
Charlie and Billy approach the three of them, "So, what do you think?"
"What?" Bella asks confused
"Your homecoming present" Charlie smirks
A look of excitement takes over Bella's face"This?"
"Just bought it off Billy here." Charlie smiles
"I totally rebuilt the engine" Jacob says
Evelyn looks at him with surprise on her face, "Really?"
"Yea" Jacobs says with a smile
Evelyn loved cars. She always drew different versions of cars she liked but she never got to handle buildiing one or fixing one.
"Wow" se says impressed, "You think you can teach me"
Jacob smiles down at her nervously, "Sure.....lets check out the car."
Jacob was on his way to the passenger seat before Bella ripped open the door and slammed Jacob's side. She apologized in a mumble. Jacob explained how to use the car before Bella asks hime of he needs a ride to school. He goes to school on the reservation so he doesn't need it. Both Evelyn wished that they would know at least one person but no luck.
