Chapter 10

"So we're really about to play baseball in a thunderstorm?" Evelyn asked while they were driving

"It's the only time we can play. You'll see why" Edward replied

They reached the filed they were going to play on and Evy saw all of the Cullen family gathered there. She assumed that they were waiting for the three of them. Esme, Edward's mother, had dragged the two girls by their arms.

"We need umpires" Esme said to the two girls

Emmett put his arm around around Evy's shoulder, "She thinks we cheat"

"I know you cheat" Esme turned to her son 

Evelyn had observed the game and she had to admit this was the most interesting game of baseball she had ever witnessed. Alice said that it was time and then they started the game. Rosalie came up first and Alice pitched the ball. Rosalie hit the ball far into the woods. She almost made it to home but Esme caught the ball and Bella called an out. After a little bit of playing Edward's team was winning and they were about to change sides before Alice had paused the game. 

"Stop!" she said with a worried voice

All of a sudden everyone headed towards the two non-vampire girls. Emmett had grabbed Evelyn's arm and put her behind him and Jasper.

"They were leaving and then they heard us" Alice said

Edward had tried to drag the two girls to the jeep but it was too late.

"Put your hair down" Bella immediately obeyed

"What about me?"

"You don't have much of a smell on you. We should be able to hide you" Jasper had finally spoke up

Evelyn nodded and moved behind him and Emmett. The group stood there as the intruders approached them. There were three of them and Evelyn had recognized them as the three vampire hunters the pack had been trying to catch for the past week. She suddenly grew mad but instantly controlled herself before the rest of the group could feel it. 

"I believe this belongs to you" the dark skinned vampire in the middle said holding up the baseball

He threw the ball at Carlisle and he quickly caught it, " Thank you"

"I'm Laurent, and this is Victoria and James" the man continued

"I'm Carlisle and this is my family"

"Hello" the vampire greeted

"I'm afraid your hunting activities have caused a bit of a mess for us" Carlisle brought up

A look of apology came over his face, "Our apologies. We didn't realize the territory had been claimed" 

"Yes, well. We maintain a permanent residence nearby"

"Really? Well that won't be a problem anymore. We were just passing through"

Victoria smirked, " The humans were tracking us but we led them east. You should be safe" she whispered the last part

" So can you use three more player? Oh come on just one came" Laurent said

"A few of us were leaving; you could take their place" Carlisle said after a few moments

The wind picked up and Evy saw James sniff the air "You brought a snack"

"The girls are with us" Carlisle defended

"I can see the game is over. We'll go now. James."

"Get Bella and Evelyn out of here now" 

Edward had grabbed both of their arms and dragged them to the Jeep and quickly drove off. Edward sped off of the field and onto the road.

"Edward what the hell is going?" Evelyn yelled as the car was still speeding down the road

"James is a tracker. The hunt is his obsession. I read his mind. My reaction in the field set him off. I just made this his most exciting game ever. He's never going to stop" 

 They continued to drive until they reached the house. They had all came up with a plan so that Bella and Evelyn had an excuse to leave the house. She saw Emmett in her room. 

"We all know what you are. Nobody hangs with the dogs that much and are just friends hanging. We won't tell Bella because we know it's pack orders. But you know she's gonna figure it out right?"

"And I'm gonna cross that bridge when I get to it. My only concern is helping protect my sister and father." she said to him. He nodded back to her and then exited her room. 

She came down the stair just as Bella went out the door. Billy had a look of complete sadness on his face. She put a hand on his shoulder, but before she could say anything. He went upstairs with tears in his eyes. Evy sighed and prayed that everything would be ok.
