When the weekend came along I thought I was going to finally get a chance to have a nice sleep in, to catch up with all of the sleep I had lost due to the dreams that had been haunting me for the last half of the week.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Vvv. Vvvv. Vvvvvvv.
The longer I stayed in bed, the more urgency sounded in the phones vibrations.
“I’m still asleep.” I murmured into my pillow.
The phone flicked back off, but I wasn’t graced with silence for more than a couple of seconds before the vibrations started up again.
Vvv. Vvvv. Vvvvvvv.
“Okay, okay.”
I pulled myself up, reaching for my phone off of my bed side table. I didn’t even bother looking at who I was calling me, there was only one real option. I answered the phone, pressing it to my ear.
“Hi Vi. What do you want?”
“What do I want?” Vi growled. “I want you to answer your phone the first time I call you!”
“I want to sleep.” I muttered, and fell back against my pillows.
“No. No you don’t. You want to hear me out.”
I had no doubt in my mind what she was about to talk to me about. Because Ren had sort of been out of action for the past few days, Vi had seized it as her opportunity to get to know Alex a little better, away from Ren’s scrutinizing eyes. She’d blown me off each afternoon so she could go down to the diner and chat to Alex. And by chat I mean flirt. Every five minutes she was calling me to update what he had said, or what she had said back. Alex seemed to be very on and off. There were a lot of times in the afternoon where they’d be having a good conversation and then just shut off – stop replying, and not say anything until the next morning. She found it hard to read him and tried coming for me for advice. I had to remind her that I was the worst person to ask, I had no male influence in my life whatsoever. No father, no brothers, no boyfriend.
Most of my knowledge of boys and relationships came from bad teen rom-coms.
“Evie Marion Delaney.” Vi hollered into the phone, I held my cellphone away from my ear to avoid any burst ear drums.“You are not to fall asleep on me.”
“Okay, okay.” I admitted defeat. “What is it?”
“We’ve been invited out!” she squealed.
“Invited out?” I yawned.
“Yeah!”
I rolled onto my front, rubbing my eyes and trying to keep myself awake so that I could actually listen and understand what Vi was telling me.
“By who?”
“Alex, duh.”
“Oh.” I yawned again.
“He has some friend just out of town who have a small gig starting at five. Please, please, please say you’ll come.”
I groaned.
“And be an awkward third wheel? I’ll pass.”
“That’s the thing…” Vi said, a little too innocently.
“What is it Vi?”
“Alex said that Ren and Chris are coming to.”
In other words she wanted me to distract and babysit Ren and Chris while she did her best to get closer to Alex and make a move.
