“Schools out for summer!” Vi sang cheerily, dancing across the parking lot as we left the school grounds that afternoon.
“Vi, we literally just finished our first day.” I reminded her, but couldn’t help but smile. It was nice to know at least the first day was over. Only a few more hundred to go now. Great.
“Did you know that in Australia they have Christmas in summer?” Vi gasped, turning the conversation back to her holiday. I didn’t know how much more she could say about her trip, it really felt like she was clutching at shoestrings. She’d already given me a very detailed description of every hotel they had stayed in, every shop should had been in, every little item that she had bought. Including the food. She’d shared about how she’d thrown up after going on one of the rollercoasters and how one of the young theme park staff had offered to look after her for a while, and how she couldn’t believe her luck that he was a quote-unquote ‘hottie’. She’d given me a play by play for each day that she had been there, despite having already received several text messages from her while she was away. Now what she was sharing really just seemed like random facts to keep her excitement up.
“Oh yeah, I guess you’re right.” I muttered but my attention wasn’t fully with her. I watched as the Chevalier cousins exited the school behind us, laughing as they headed over to where their motorbikes were stashed. It drew my thoughts back to thinking about Ren. He hopped on his motorbike, revving the engine and kicking up the stand.
How had he known where Vi had been?
“Say, did you tell anyone where you went on holiday? Like besides me?”
“No? Why? Shouldn’t I? Am I being obnoxious? Mum always says I’m obnoxious, but I’m not that bad am I?”
“No Vi.” As much as I didn’t feel like having to hear a play by play about her holiday, I didn’t want to hurt her feelings. She could be a little self-absorbed at times, but she meant well. Sometimes it was like she tried sharing her experiences with me, because she knew they were ones I’d probably never have. I wasn’t so sure second hand enjoyment of holidays could really be a thing though.
I shook my head to clear the thoughts of Ren, and pay more attention to Vi. It didn’t matter. He would have overheard her mum or her dad and was sick of hearing Vi asking me to guess her destination, so blurted it out to me. He was a weird guy.
The more important thing for me to consider was that I hadn’t seen Vi for most of the summer, which felt oddly wrong. I thought about asking her about the wolves. Vi wasn’t much of an animal person, unless the animal was attached to a boy, as the koalas had been at a zoo she had delicately taken the time to describe to me. The talk of the wolves usually resulted in her rolling her eyes. She didn’t care about them. ‘They’re wild.’ She’d say. ‘they take care of themselves’. But the truth of the matter was that it was pretty cold out at this time of the year, and I worried that their food supply would be short.
“Do you want to grab a milkshake?” I asked Vi as we approached my car. It wasn’t so easy on the eyes, a shoddy little car covered in chipped blue paint. It could be a little temperamental too and I dreaded every time that I was to start it up. Who knew whether it would come to life or not. Especially with the weather keeping the engine awfully cold.
“Sure.” She grinned, her eyes told me that I was paying, she opened up the passenger’s door, hopping in effortlessly. “Might as well enjoy our first day back together.”
