SORRY THAT THIS CHAPTER IS RELATIVELY SHORT - HOPEFULLY GOING TO BE INCREASING THE SIZE IN THE NEXT FEW.
It was somewhat empowering being able to walk in to school, knowing what I was capable of. I knew how the spark worked.
Sylvia had taught me last night.
The trick was recognizing that the spark was always there. A dull tickle in my toes, only noticeable when I focused my every thought on it. Once you could feel it you could chose when and how you made it grow. Whether to make it big, or small. Whether it was a spark electricity or if it turned into the burning of a flame. Whatever it was that you decided upon, you could feel it coursing through your veins and into your palms where it all came together at once to create whatever it was you were hoping for. I could create electricity and flames on my own now, though it wasn't something I liked to do away from Sylvia. I tended to either do it to small, or worse, too big.
Maybe Ren would think twice about pissing me off if he realised what I was capable of.
This was especially relevant when I realised I was going to be spending a lot more time with him, despite my own feelings towards the matter. Naturally, Vi wanted to be around Alex, and well, when it came to school, the Chevalier cousins seemed to be a package deal.
When we all sat down at a lunch table it was the awkwardest silence I had the honour of being part of. The kind of awkward silence that made me want to burst out with nervous Laughter.
Ren looked in my direction but all I could do was smile back at him.
"Hope my filth isn't too close to you." I said in the most polite tone I could manage.
Vi elbowed me in the ribs and Chris and Alex exchanged glances before wearily looking at Ren.
Ren's Cheshire Cat grin resurfaced, making me question my own smile.
"It's been a lot closer than this and I managed." The way that he emphasised the 'a lot' made me sure he was talking about our kiss. His smile said 'two can play at this game'.
My stupid, misinformed kiss with Ren.
I flushed red and vi raised her eyebrows questioningly.
"So.. Anyway." Chris interjected as I opened my mouth, trying to find the words to say. "How's life?"
Chris looked around our faces, begging for someone to answer. Someone to break the tension that was so thick, it felt like it was strangling me.
"Electrifying" I said at the same time Ren said "steamy"
I rolled my eyes.
Then, I felt the dull tickle in my toes. I let it grow into my hands, feeling the electrical pulse there. I waited until I knew for sure that it was nothing more than a zap, and then touched Rens leg under the table.
He flinched back in shock. Then kicked me back.
"So um.." Vi tried again. "History was something, huh?"
I shrugged. History was weird now that I knew most of it was true. The people going strange and betraying one another. Probably the product of one of my ancestors.
They sort of seemed like bad people... But that didn't really surprise me either. All the members of my dad's family I had ever met were about as sour as Ren usually was. They were exactly the sort of people you would pin as being psycho magic people, who would punish their enemies in a blink of their eye.
Dad hadn't seemed like that, though.
Dad hadn't seemed magical at all. I wasn't sure whether being a caster was something that tended to skip a generation. But surely he at least knew about coming from a family of casters.
