I thought I’d seen Evie mad before.

I thought I’d seen her upset a dozen times.

It occurred to me how completely wrong I was, as soon as me and Cosmo approached the clearing that Alex himself had just arrived at. It was a miracle that I’d been able to follow Alex this far, keeping him in sight. In his wolf form he had no sense to him, he made a beeline straight for the source of his torture, just like I hoped he would and only my motorbike had just been enough to keep him in sight.

I had heard Evie long before I saw her.

She was screaming and grunting at the top of her lungs. When I had first heard the sounds I had been terrified, unsure of what state I would stumble upon Evie in. But as soon as I saw her, despite the situation she was in, I couldn’t help but have a small smile on my face. I’d been so worried about Evie that I’d forgotten that she was a girl who could very much hold her own.

In the middle of the field Evie sent out lines of flames to the figure standing in front of her, engulfing them in a room made of fire. I was a little disheartened, however, when I realized just who it was that she was firing at. The figure that was coming under Evie’s attack that looked so much like a Delaney that it could only be Rebecca. That meant that Rebecca was back, that Evie had gone along with whatever messed up spell was required of her.

Rebecca raised her hands and quickly extinguished the flames that surrounded her. Evie pushed out her hands from her chest, sending out flashes of light that resembled forks of lighting straight at Rebecca, who once again, with the simple flick of her hand rid herself of any danger.

I hung back as Alex ran straight for Rebecca and stood loyally next to her. He was only the first of many, though. One by one the members of my family brushed past me, darting straight for Rebecca’s side, completely ignoring me and Cosmo’s presence. Everyone surround Rebecca and stared down Evie. Alex, Chris, Aunt Cas, even my mum and dad stood loyal at Rebecca’s side, like a line of soldiers ready to attack.

“I thought you guys were meant to hate the Delaney’s.” Cosmo hissed at me.

“We are,” I agreed. “But apparently she’s meant to be the alpha of sorts.”

Cosmo let out a lowly laugh. The irony had not been lost on him.

Evie stopped her attack, staring down at the wolves surrounding Rebecca.

“What are you doing to them?” Evie demanded.

“Nothing.” Rebecca laughed. “They’re simply looking after their master.”

“You’re nothing to them.” Evie growled defensively, taking a step toward Rebecca, her hands raised and ready to fire. But as she took this extra step, so did my family, equally as fierce snarls growing in the back of their throats.

“There!” Cosmo exclaimed. “Marcy is there!”

He was right. Just beyond where Rebecca and Evie were having their scuffle, Marcy lay unconscious next to another girl.

“Alright, we’ll figure out a way to – “

Before I could finish telling Cosmo that we needed to come up with a plan, he had decided he didn’t need one, thrusting himself into the clearing and toward the danger. I groaned and rolled my eyes.

I darted after Cosmo just as Evie set out another set of flames towards Rebecca, distinctly aiming them a little higher to avoid any wolves being hit in the cross fire. I appreciated that more than I could say.

Cosmo shifted into his cat form once more, zipping behind Evie and Rebecca, and pouncing onto Marcy’s arm, attempting to jolt her awake.

With Rebecca still preoccupied by disarming Evie’s attacks, Alex’s shifted, homing in on Cosmo’s appearance in the area. Alex’s eyes only rested upon the small white figure for a second or two before he stepped forward from Rebecca, pushing forward into a run after him.
