the outer banks was one island of two tribes, the pogues and the kooks. maya thatcher is a sixteen year old rebel with a heart of gold. her best friends and her embark on an adventure to figure out what happened to john routledge and his search for the royal merchant, along with their lives as pogues and possibly a not-so-new romance.

maya was a more closed off girl than she liked to admit. she had her group of best friends, but her actual best friend would always be jj. they had known each other—for what seemed like forever—since they only lived down the street from the other and played together as kids that soon became inseparable.
maya also had a troubled past. shortly before john b's dad disappeared, maya's dad had a boating accident and passed, leading to her mother falling off the deep end and leaving the outer banks entirely, including maya. maya luckily had an older sister who had just turned eighteen that took maya in, even though she was in no way fit to care for her. to maya, though, it was better than being thrown into foster care on the mainland away from her friends.
