POV Brooklyn

The night after the boys rescued me from the Delanceys, I headed back to Brooklyn to tell Pat my final decision. I personally think he was surprised at first. I simply explained to him I had a lot to learn before it was time to grow up.

Of course, he supported me. He is my brother after all. He even told me whenever I decide to go back to school, he'd help me every step of the way.

Before I left, Pat told me he wanted to have Race over for dinner. He even suggested for Spot to come over too so we can all play cards.

This made me laugh. Race was gonna have a great time.

I walk back to Manhattan smiling ear to ear. I skip up the porch steps to the lodge house and greet Jack. He wears a worried expression.

"Hey Jackie, what's up?" I ask closing the door.

He runs hand through his distressed brown hair.

"I's realized yous was missin and didn't know where ya went. I's was just gonna go and look for ya. I told yous, I's want ya ta always leave with someone." he rambles.

I sigh remembering the promise I made to him. He is just trying to make sure I am safe. I can't be mad at him.

"You're right. I'm sorry. I'm fine though!" I say smiling innocently trying to cheer him up.

He laughs, shaking his head and heads back up the stairs to the bedroom.

I really mean something to these boys.

Cold hands cover my eyes

"Guess who!" the voice shouts excitedly.

I immediately felt a cozy feeling sweep through my body. I relax my tense shoulders and grin at the familiar voice.

"Racetrack Higgens is that really you?" I gasp dramatically.

He drops his hands and hugs me from behind. He kisses the top of my head as I melt into his loving grasp.

"I's got a surprise for you..." he whispers.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah. Come with me." he says whisking me back outside.

We giggle hand in hand as he leads me through the busy streets of New York. We walk down a few familiar streets until Race's sacred bar comes into view.

"Is this a surprise for me or for yous?" I tease.

Racetrack rolls his eyes and playfully whacks my arm.

"Take it easy, will ya? C'mon let's just go inside." he says pulling me inside the bar.

Just like the previous time we came, we go straight to the bar and sit in the same two stools we occupied last time. Race even orders us the same beers.

Finally, I realize what he was doing.  And it is so sweet.

He is recreating our first real date... before I ruined it with my plans to move in with my brother.

"Race, that's a lot of money. Is beer always this expensive?" I recite.

He smiles knowing I finally caught on.

I take a long sip of my beer and try not to shutter at the horrid taste. I follow Race's eyes around the room.

He's listening carefully to the music. New York, New York by the one and only, his idol, his favorite, Frank Sinatra.
