Carli's parents had always had a sick and twisted view of the world. Everything revolved around money and that was all that mattered. They didn't see her as their only child to be loved and adored. They saw her as an economic asset.

As soon as she was old enough to work, she was out making money. Whether the money was legal or illegal, it didn't matter. It was usually jobs around the back of shops, seeing as she couldn't be seen or else the employers would get done for child labour.

She even ended up having to drop out of school as she couldn't keep up with her studies. Her parents had never seen the use of putting money into something when all you got in return was dept. A pretty rediculous notion when people who graduate university more often than not get payed more than those who don't. However, it seemed they had other plans in mind for her.

It was the morning of Carli's 18th birthday. She wished she could say she was excited but, sadly, birthdays weren't really celebrated in their house. They were seen as a waste of money and, in the words of her father, 'what's the point in celebrating going round the sun again. Congratu-fucking-lations you're alive.'

She woke up, washed up and got dressed. Then she went downstairs as quietly as possible, making sure she didn't wake her parents. She strolled into the kitchen and began making breakfast for her parents and herself. They had been very strict on what she was allowed to eat lately and she had no clue why. The only thing she did know was that she had a bad feeling about it though. "Plain omelette again, just peachy." She thought to herself, rolling her eyes as she cracked the eggs into a bowl and whisked them with milk.

She hummed to herself as she cooked the three meals. For once, she was in at least a slightly good mood. That mood was instantly soured when she heard muffled words and heavy footsteps coming from upstairs. Lucky for her, their food was already done so at least they wouldn't shout at her for once.

"Carli! Sweetie, happy birthday!" Her mother smiled widely at her and gave her a hug as she grabbed the meal she had made her. She was completely shocked. "But she's never happy to see me..."

"Good morning, darling. Happy birthday!" Her father exclaimed as he came up to her and gave her a kiss on her forehead.

"What the actual fuck is going on??" She had never been more confused. Firstly, her parents were being nice to her for once. Secondly, they were acknowledging the fact it's her birthday.

"Um, thank you?" Sarcasm came thick through her voice as she spoke. She knew by now not to let her guard down and she wasn't about to start doing so.

"Actually, we have a present for you, darling." Her father smiled at her and handed her a small box. She accepted it carefully and unwrapped it as if it would break with one wrong move. She carefully flipped the lid of the box and gasped in shock. Inside there lay a beautiful diamond jewellery set.

"Wow, this is so beautiful! Thank you so much. I don't know how I can pay this back to you both." She continued to stare at the jewellery, floored by its beauty.

"Trust me, you'll be paying it back to us." Her mother muttered under her breath, a sinister grin settled upon her lips.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Undertones of anger filled her voice as she spoke.

"You'll be wearing the jewellery tomorrow, when we sell you to the delightful Park family. You're to wed their son in roughly a year. Now that you've turned 18, we thought we'd get our money's worth out of you." Her mother spoke the words as if they were the most casual thing. All she could do was stand there in complete shock at what she had just heard.

"You're selling me?!" She yelled in outrage.

"Yes, I thought I had made that perfectly clear. Make sure you wear your best outfit tomorrow. If you make a bad impression and they don't buy you you'll have hell to pay." And with that, they both left her downstairs and left to go to their bedrooms.

Her legs gave out in shock and she collapsed to the floor, finally allowing tears to flow down her cheeks. She took a couple of minutes to get her herself before coming to terms with what was inevitably going to happen.

"I guess I'm being sold to the Park's."
