“I should have read Harry Potter when I had the chance,” Mikel muttered to himself as he walked down to the open field of the arena. “I should have studied Percy Jackson. Maybe it would have proved useful now. Books do tell the truth.”“I don’t even know how to fight,” he added despairingly as he moved towards Neil and Damon, his legs quaking. “I’m not even the main character, this should not be happening to me.”
“We have our two combatants!” Neil shouted, raising his hands up in the air and the apprentices yelled in delight. Damon went over to the weapons rack, and picked up a sturdy metal axe with a large curved blade which glinted in the sunlight.
He returned to face Mikel and smiled wickedly. Abruptly, Mikel felt adrenaline shoot to his legs and something forced his body to move into battle stance.
“What the heck is happening?” he murmured to himself as his body vibrated uncontrollably.
Familiar symbols filled his vision and Mikel realized he was looking at something like a gamepad.
Four arrows were on the left hand side, the usual up, down, left and right arrows, then on the right hand side were the triangle, box, circle and letter X. At the top were the letters R and L in boxes.
The middle of his vision between the arrows and other symbols was clear and he could see Damon grinning haughtily at him.
He could do this, he was an okay gamer, even though he always lost to Tyler when they were younger but that was in the past.
This was the present, a very unreal one, but the present nonetheless.
He ran through the data that suddenly presented itself in his mind; the triangle, box, circle and X could all be used to attack, the arrows to move, jump and crouch, R to block and L to switch weapons.Oh, he could switch weapons?
Suddenly aware of Damon swinging his huge axe down on him, Mikel used his staff to block the unsurprisingly heavy hit, fully expecting the rod to splinter and break apart.
He was pleasantly surprised when it held strong and R glowed.
“What are you thinking about, priest?” the Spartan growled. “Whether I’ll give you a quick death or not?”
The ‘up’ arrow glowed and Mikel jumped away, then flipped midair, farther away from Damon than he had thought he would land. Good.
“Coward!” Damon boomed, running after him, unaware Mikel was analysing him carefully from his spot.
“He’s supernaturally strong as all legionnaires are,” the Druid was muttering to himself, “so beating him in a game of strength or stamina is out of the question for me. Still he sees me as weak so he doesn’t think I’ll be a problem which is to my advantage. Since my own stamina is hopelessly low, I have to take him out with one hit.”
He mentally scanned a few spells, aware that Damon was advancing rapidly towards him and took aim, holding his staff in front of him.
“I beckon unto me the strength of the angels, and to my foe the wrath of gods, let him feel the power of judgement and know that this day Erynla lives!”
As he spoke, five transparent layers made up of circles, each bigger than the last and filled with unreadable symbols appeared in front of him, and the markings on his staff and the tattoos on his body glowed a deep purple. The circles began shooting off towards Damon like fireworks, exploding loudly and burning the Spartan badly.
At the end of it all, Damon was on his knees, looking like he was about to black out but not before he mustered all his strength to aim a knife at Mikel’s shoulder. He fell to the floor heavily, and for a moment the arena was silent.
