The bells were extra early this morning, resonating with an urgency that let everyone know that something important was happening.

Besides, instructors and helpers were at every dorm room, knocking and telling the students to get up and go to the Basilica immediately.

As Mikel hurriedly pulled his clothes on, he looked around to his roommates who looked as confused and groggy as he was.

“Do you know what’s happening Victoria?” he asked with a yawn, slipping on some shoes. The short girl shook her head.

“If they’re waking us up this early, it must be for something very important.” She wrapped a shawl around her shoulders, shivering in the cool night air. “Let’s go, who knows what they’ll do if we’re late?”

Eric rubbed his eyes and yawned as they filed out, meeting several other apprentices in the hallway, a helper directing the sleepy students towards the door.

“I just hope they serve us breakfast over this,” he grumbled, rubbing his hands together and glancing at the dark sky. “This is hours before we normally wake up.”

“You would give your soul to the devil in exchange for food,” Victoria jeered at him. “Forget the devil, you would give it to a No Blessed.”

Eric yawned again before speaking.
“I would sell it to anyone who offered me a lifetime buffet,” he answered with a wink. “Looking for a handsome young man with a pure soul Vicky?”

Victoria turned away, covering her smile with her shawl. “Shut up, minion.”

“Anything for the pretty lady. We can negotiate my price later,” Eric said casually, making Victoria reach up and slap his shoulder.

He was taller than Mikel, which made it harder to hit him, something she despised.

Mikel grinned at the barely disguised
flirting, using it to occupy his mind as the queue moved slowly.

Somewhere along the line, between his intense studying and training after classes, he had missed a peculiar attraction growing between Eric and Victoria.

It was bizarre to see the high and mighty Victoria turn into an anime school girl when Eric paid her a compliment or flirted with her. It was even stranger when she let him do things like pat her head or call her nicknames.

Mikel was sure she would sever his tongue if he called her ‘Vicky’ and say bye-bye to his arm the day he tried to even ruffle her hair.

He was sure couples did this kind of thing, but he’d never thought he would see Victoria and Eric get together with his eyes.

Still, their unusual romance was amusing in its own way and he enjoyed seeing it unfold.

Finally, their line made it outside where instructors were also going to the Basilica, and out of habit, Mikel visually searched for Astra.

Since his discovery six days ago, they had not talked and even in Astra’s Paramilitary Arts class, he had chosen to spar with Damon as his partner instead of waiting for everyone to partner up and then being stuck with Astra.

Astra didn’t even look in his general direction, which sucked after getting used to little waves when their eyes met and Mikel had not ventured to the fields again.

Magic was his strong point and although he had gotten better at one on one combat, it was certainly not an area he wanted to take Astra on.

If she wanted to give him the cold shoulder, then fine. He had been getting the cold shoulder from his parents for more than ten years, and they were the people who had raised him.
