The feeling of pain was not one Tyrese was unaccustomed to, but it still felt like his first time each time he woke up with a wound. This time however, the pain was enormous and he stifled a cry as he sat up, looking over to where he had felt the ache from. His right arm was swollen and bruised, and as he tried to wiggle his fingers, alarm filled him when he did not feel any sensations.
“I doubt you’re going to be able to use your arm for a while, if at all,” Mikel’s voice drew him out of a possible panic and he looked up to see the Druid stepping away from his horse and towards him. His face was drawn and tired as he squatted beside Tyrese, visible lines adding years to his face.
“That Demon did a good number on you, smashed the bones from your wrist to your elbow and half of your fingers. While I’m not as good as a Healer, I’ve nursed your hand enough so you won’t have to amputate it, but I don’t think you’ll ever be able to hold a sword again.”
Numb shock coursed through Tyrese at Mikel’s words and he tried to fist his hand again, misery coursing through him when his fingers did not cooperate.
Mikel stood up, using his hands to assist him. “Well, since you’re awake now, I should get going.”
Tyrese turned so fast he was half surprised his neck didn’t snap. “You’re leaving?”
“Yes,” Mikel replied, patting his horse gently, but his voice was hard. “That monster took Astra, and I’m going to find it.”
“You can’t!” Tyrese yelled, trying to stand. In his hurry, he forgot his hand was injured and tried to use it, only realizing his mistake when it failed him, and he fell to the dusty ground painfully with a loud thud.
Mikel did not even turn.
“We have to get to the Life Gate!” the Knight insisted, his pain leaking into his voice. “If we don’t get there in time, the King will destroy this world!”
Mikel threw his bag atop his horse. “I’m sorry Tyrese, but that’s your problem now. I have to find Astra first.”
“How will you do that?” Tyrese shouted, getting angrier as he talked. “You’ll just wander about until you find her by accident? You’ll wait for the Demon to show up again?”
“I can trace the Demon’s magic, and even if I couldn’t, what’s it to you?”
“I can’t face the King like this Mikel, not when I’m injured. I need your help.”
Mikel sighed, and he hung his head. “I can’t help you Tyrese, not when I don’t know where Astra is.”
Tyrese’s brain went into overdrive as Mikel continued loading his horse. If the Druid left, there was no doubt he was fighting a losing battle. There would be no chance to defeat the King, when his dominant had had been rendered useless.
With Mikel, he would have a bit of backup, never mind if the man was a first year.
He had promised Imogen, and she had believed him. He would not go down like this. He tried to get up again, to convince Mikel to stay, but when he moved, a sharp pain flashed through his head, and with the pain, came a memory.
“He’s with the King.” Tyrese groaned out, leaning against the tree trunk wearily. His head and his arm, just how beat up was he?
Mikel turned to Tyrese, momentarily confused. “Who?”
“Astra. When that monster broke my hand, he mentioned the King would be pleased,” Tyrese looked at Mikel, noticing he was frozen in place. “That Demon came from the King, who he probably took Astra to.”
