For Mikel Ark, being offered a job by the world's biggest gaming company is a dream come true, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will launch his career as a hotshot programmer.
But what Mikel hasn't been told is that his employer's...
It was his first class since he had landed in No Blessed and accidentally enrolled himself in the August Church of Erynla and surprisingly, Mikel found he was actually excited to go to class as he left the dining halls with everyone else, heading to his first lecture of the day.
The day before, he and Eric had been briefed by Victoria on the lecture series the church offered. There were thirty two subjects the church proffered and out of these thirty two, an apprentice had to offer six.
After some careful consideration, he had decided on Paramilitary Arts, Transmutation, the study of Mystical Flora, Dueling and Armed Combat, Monstrology and Fiendish Studies and finally Mental Defense.
The last one had only been picked because Mikel had needed one more subject to complete his six and he figured Mental Defense was all about meditation. Well, he was good in yoga. That had to count for something.
He hurried out to get his staff and go to class as he’d had to leave it in his room since no weapons were allowed in the dining area, although he didn’t see how dangerous it could be. After all, this was a place where magical beings prospered. What could a wooden stick do against them?
He was so absorbed in his thoughts he didn’t noticed when he rushed past Astra and Thelma, who had been observing him.
“He seems excited to be in a place like this,” Astra grunted, watching him go.
Thelma sighed dreamily. “He’s so adorable when he’s thinking.”
Astra gave her a questioning look. “Don’t you have a class to teach? Healer 101 or something?”
Thelma broke out of her daydream, glaring at him. “It’s Common Antidotes and Cures. Besides I’m just a sub in case the teacher is late or doesn’t show.”
Sagely, he nodded, folding his arms. “Wonderful. All this time teaching cures and you still haven’t treated your own perverted mind.”
“I don’t have a dirty mind, just a sexy imagination.” Thelma waved off his accusation, and squared her shoulders. “Know the difference.”
“Whatever you say,” Astra said and his face turned serious. “Did you hear the news? Our student turn up dropped.”
“Yeah. Apparently, both yours and the Prelate’s speech scared off a good portion of the new apprentices. Where we had 339 students yesterday, we have 244 today,” she twisted a lock of her flashy yellow hair. “95 gone.”
“Still better than last year,” Astra cut in. “Besides it will save us the stress of having to write letters of apology to families when an apprentice dies.”
“Yeah,” Thelma replied. “Maybe.” She grabbed his arm and pulled him forward, “Let’s go see how the new guys fare in armed combat. I hear it’s the first class of the day.”
Astra let her pull him along, but only because he wanted to see the people he too would be teaching in action.
