Same old shit

The sun has just begun to rise and a light breeze comes through my window as I wake up. I sit up out of bed and stretch until my body shakes violently as my muscles are released from all their tension. I look out over the pier and see the crystal blue sky's and the orange tinge the sun cascades over the water. I check the time and it's 6:30 - shit I am running late. I run to the bathroom and quickly brush my teeth as I slide on my work pants and my polo. I spit in the sink and get a quick glance at my appearance. My long wavy brown hair is fixed in a messy bun as crazy strands stand at all different angles off my head. My green eyes are bright but the bags are unforgiving. I look like a mess but I don't have anytime to fix it. I run to the kitchen and grab an apple as I grab my bag and head for the pier.
I jump into my boat and start the engine as I untie myself from the pier. The water is calm today and the boat glides effortlessly through the surface of the water. I don't pass many other boats on my trip to the docks in the morning. It's usually a quiet and quick ride over. After 10 minute I officially start to see the huge mansions on the coast. There properties stretch for acres and most likely have pools, large boats, or multiple cars. This is where I work, the side of the island where the rich people live. Since moving here from Florida I learned that there is a pretty large divide between the two parts of the island. The kids in The Cut where I live call themselves Pogues while they call the rich kids Kooks. It didn't take me long to see the divide. It's almost as if they don't even live on the same island.
I arrive at the docks and Travis my coworker greets me. I kinda know that he has a thing for me but I pretend like I don't, so I get to keep seeing him act like a complete idiot when he's around me. Travis lives with his parents in there mansion but isn't really spoiled like the rest of the kooks. He works for his dad who is my boss. Our job is to clean and get our clients boats ready to be taken out onto the water. We get paid pretty good since a lot of the Kooks don't feel like cleaning their boats themselves. I got this job through my brother Conner who is a technician and works on a lot of the Kooks boats all over the island. I jump off my boat and start heading towards the office.
Travis- Hey Kirby how was the trip!
Me- it was the same as everyday Travis
Travis- ohh that's nice mine was a-little bumpy this morning
Me- considering you ride a bike on these shitty roads I wouldn't be surprised
Travis- so I heard that the Dolce's have come back from Florida and that...
Me- Trav I just moved here I don't know who the Dolce's are?
Travis- ohh yeah sorry. They are probably the richest family on this island. They travel a lot but there kids mainly live here. Zach and Ryan throw the biggest parties because there parents are hardly ever home. You should come with me tonight!
Me- ah I would love too Trav but I promised my brother that I would help him with the house tonight. Ever since that storm the trees are everywhere.
Travis- yeah you're right sorry for asking...
The shift today was long, I work 7/3 so this last half hour is lasting forever. I sit on the edge of the dock and wait for my time to clock out. I watch as the boats travel past the dock and cause ripples in the water following them. My favorite thing is when the boats with other kids my age on them drive past. The music is usually really loud and they are all just enjoying each other. I haven't really had the time to make any friends. As soon as I got here I started working. I work 5 days a week and on the weekends I spend most my time surfing or just riding around on my boat. The alarm on my phone finally goes off. I head over to the office and clock out and say bye to Travis and his dad. I jump in my boat and head off back home like every other day. At 3 the waters are pretty full but as you head towards The Cut the boats dissipate and the ride become much calmer. Being here for two weeks I have already meet some fun old people who sit on their piers or in the boats fishing. Ruth is my favorite. She always makes sure to sit out around 3 so she can give me a wave. Sometimes we spark up small conversations about how I am doing or how's work but mostly it's just a kind smile and wave. Once I pass Ruth's house I am about 10 minutes from my house. This part of the ride would probably only take 5 minutes but I always slow down the boat and enjoy the time on the water. Sometimes I even anchor the boat and dip my feet into the water. And that's what I did today. I turn the engine off and throw the anchor into the water and watch as it sinks about 15 feet to the bottom. I open my cooler and pull out a bud light and crack it open. Surprisingly there was no one passing through this channel. But I took advantage of that and decided to take my work clothes off and go for a quick swim to cool off. I put my drink down and take my pants and polo off. I take my hair out of my bun and let it fall down. I shiver from the breeze as my hair brushes against my lower back. I dive into the water and push myself deeper and deeper until I was at the bottom. I sat there for awhile or until I needed to get air again. I swam back up to the surface and decided to do one more trip down to enjoy the water as it gets colder the deeper you go. This time I took a deeper breath and actually hit my timer on my watch to see how long I could stay at the bottom. I sit on the sand and use the rope from the anchor to keep myself in place. I look at my watch and see it's been a-little over two minutes. As I grab the rope to help pull myself to the surface I see another shadow of a boat the is next to mine. I hurry to the surface worried someone was trying to steal my belongings. I launch out of the water on the opposite side of my boat and quickly hopped on. Four people stare at me stunned with confusion on their faces.
Hey are you okay? You were down there for awhile!
Me- yeah I am fine um why are you guys on my boat?
Pope- Oh um I am sorry. We were just worried that someone left it or was in the water. My name is Pope!
Pope stretches his hand out and we grip hands and give it a quick shake.
Me- it's okay I understand. Um I am Kirby
Kiara- hi I am Ki and these two are JJ and John B. Are you new to town?
Me- yeah I moved here two weeks ago I live with brother about a mile that way.
JJ- ohh so you live in The Cut. Don't worry we do too! Me and John B live at his place you should come by sometime.
Ki- ugh just ignore him he is always a big flirt. But we will leave you alone. See ya around.
Pope hops back onto their boat and Ki pushes them away from mine as they start there engine and slowly drive away. I pull up my anchor and start my engine and drive towards my house. I can't help but think about them though. They were so sweet and were pretty much the first people to actually acknowledge my existence. I did notice that the one boy who I think was John B didn't say anything. He just kind of stood there by the steering wheel and watched. He didn't seem creepy just quiet. I pull up to my pier and dock my boat. I sit on the pier for a few minutes before heading towards my house. It then hit me that maybe I shouldn't have lied to Travis about having to help my brother with the house. Maybe I should go to that party with him and meet some people my own age. I am gonna text him...
Me- Hey Trav it turns out I am actually free tonight if you are still going to that party I would be down to go!!
Travis- Yeah ofc I will be at yours at 7 to pick you up!
Okay here goes nothing. It's time I get out there and meet some people ya know. Maybe even those guys from earlier will be there! I better get in the shower and start getting ready.
