"Are you retarded?" someone shouted, sounding exasperated. "She has the entire vampire race after her and you decide to leave her on the streets of New York? I don't know how to put this to you, Inerra, but you're a fuckwit. An absolute..."
"Not helping, Patria. Not helping," I could hear the monster stress. "Look I realise what I did wasn't smart, but so many things, so many people, just pissed me the fuck off! And it's her fault for getting in my head like that."
My fault?
"Her fault? Her fault? My god you're thick. She's a human being and you're a pureblood with magical powers! How in the hell is having anger management her fault?" the female shrieked on my behalf.
Magical powers? Anger management, sure, but magic?
Silence enveloped the three of us for a few minutes and I tried to remain as still and sleep-like as possible. I wasn't ready to face him, not after what he'd done to me.
"I know you're awake, Charlie," he muttered, not sounding irritated like before. His voice still gave me the chills though.
I pursed my lips, opening my eyes, and then exhaled heavily, pushing myself upright in the bed. My head crashed like someone was throwing books against a hollow wall. I winced, reaching for my skull. A pair of hands were on my sides to steady me. They were more deadly than red-hot coal yet caused my hormones to jiggle excitedly.
"Easy now. You've lost a lot of blood."
"How would you know? Oh wait, of course, you're the one that took it from me," I snapped, eyes like snake slits when they pinned down on his face. His deep blue eyes appeared rueful, but I dismissed the forgiveness inside of me hurriedly. He didn't deserve it, whatever reasons he claimed.
"I'm sorry," he murmured, stare so sincere for a lingering second. "I'm irrational when I'm...upset."
"You were upset?" I whispered, getting angrier with him. He'd hurt me. I had thought that he was more decent than people gave him credit for. How wrong I turned out to be. "Were you left for dead by someone who you thought might, just might, give a damn about you?"
His lips parted, but no words followed. He knew there was nothing he could say that would convince me he was truly apologising or truly regretful for leaving me bleeding in that alley.
I wanted to turn away and give him the silent treatment, but my gaze had wandered to the girl with the same eyes as Inerra. She had wild red hair that really was a fascinating feature. Her face was expressionless when our eyes locked, skin flawless with high cheekbones that models would kill for.
"This is my cousin, Patria," Inerra explained, dismissing my mood. "She deserted the Royal Darknesses to help me, except they're not aware of that," he explained, breath tickling my neck and muddling my thoughts even more.
"Pleasure to meet you," she said, offering the tiniest of smiles. It was quickly removed when Inerra looked at her.
"Likewise," I said, enjoying that she didn't like Inerra.
"I got you some clothes. There're a few things planned for tonight and I need you with me," he informed.
I arched my brow at him; incredulous. His rich features were so close. Part of me, somewhere forbidden, really wanted to kiss him, those lips... "You need me with you? I thought I pissed you off?"
