Mark and I were sitting on the couch, watching the news, listening closely as the announcer explained what was going on.
"Cities are beginning to fall apart as COVID-19 begins killing more than its infecting. Very few in the world are left who are't effected. Avoid your neighbors, schools, stores. " The announcer said
"Sean, the death toll went up." Mark sighed as he looked at his phone"Ugh." I sighed "This crap worried me."
"Yeah. We're up to 2 million cases now."
"It's not going to get any better, is it?" Jace asked
"I don't think so kiddo." Mark sighed
I walked to the bathroom, grabbing my medication from the cabinet.
Only 5 days left. then I was out, with no way of getting a refill. They're preparing us for when the run out. I thought to myself as I took a pill out and swallowed it. I shook my head putting the bottle away and walked back into the kitchen.
"Pax just got canceled." Mark told me
"You were so excited for Pax." I sighed
"What do you mean you're sick?" We heard Jace yell from the living room
Mark and I walked out to see Jace talking on the phone. I'm not sure who he was talking to, but it didn't seem like a good conversation.
"Sam, what the hell do you mean you're sick?" I asked, a scared tone in his voice
"No, no that's not possible. Sam I swear to fuck." Jace sighed
After listening for a moment I felt my phone buzz. I pulled my phone out to see a message from Sam's mother.
Alexa: Sean, you have to watch Jace.
Sean: Why?
Alexa: Sam's sick Sean. Not the normal flu. I know you guys have't been out unless necessary, and Jace hasn't left at all, but... Sam has it Sean
Sean: Shit. Alexa I'm sorry.
Alexa: Sam should be fine. I'm more worried about Jace. I know he's in remission but still. With his other conditions...
Sean: I know. The doctors are so careful when he goes to the hospital each week. I don't know what we're going to do if this keeps getting worse.
Alexa: I'm not sure. Stay safe Sean.
Sean: You too.
I sighed as I rubbed my temples.
"Sam's got it. Doesn't he?" Mark asked
"Yeah. Mark I think we should call the doctor." I stated
"Okay, why?" He asked
"This stuff isn't going to get any better, Mark. What happens when Jace can't get his blood transfusions?" I said looking him in the eyes, the realization setting in
"I know what you're thinking. He wouldn't be able to do that Sean. Just, don't get ahead of yourself." Mark sighed
"Mark, we're getting at least 70 new cases everyday and that number isn't taking long to increase. What if they don't find a cure?" I said afraid of the idea
"We will figure things out Sean. Just take a second and breath-"
"Mark, they already have a lack of blood. I had to have blood drawn for him last time, remember. That was illegal before this shit started." I reminded him
Mark sighed in defeat, knowing I was right. We called the doctor and he conformed our worst fears. Jace has a rare condition that effects his blood. The condition has only ever been found in women, usually after they hit menopause. Jace is the second man to develop it, his uncle being the first. The condition effects almost every female in his family and developed in all of them who got it before the age of 10. His condition causes him to have a lack in white blood cells and also effects his liver, and other major organs. The only treatment for his condition is receiving weekly blood transfusions.
"Hey Jace, almost ready to go?" I yelled up the stairs
"Ugh." He sighed walking down the stairs
"Hey man, you've been doing this for years. Should be used to it by now." Mark laughed
"Yeah. Just all the stupid precautions now. Fuckin mask, gloves and changing them every 5 seconds, Washing my hands, oh and dare I touch my face." He sighed
"I know kiddo. But you'll get used to it. I don't think it's going to change any time soon." I sighed, putting on my own mask and gloves
"Are you gonna have to do it again, Pa? I don't want to see you sick again." Jace sighed
"I'l be fine kiddo. I'd rather this than the alternative." I assured him
"Yeah. Me getting sick from someone else's blood." He laughed
"Sure." I said forcing a laugh
"Are you gonna come in with me? Will they even let you anymore?" Jace asked Mark
"I can't come in with this time kiddo. Your Pa will be there. I have to do... something else." Mark said with a pause
"What's going on with you two today?" He asked
"Nothing." I said quickly
"There's something. You're worried about something." He said staring at me
"Come on Jace. we're gonna miss your appointment." Mark said rushing him out the door
I'm not sure if Jace was even thinking about what would happen when the blood supplies ran out. Mark and I sure as hell were. Everything was already closed and not many people wanted to risk going out to donate blood. Jace was lucky enough to have a common blood type, but his luck couldn't last forever. With people staying home, the towns looked empty. The virus was mutating every day and things were getting scarce. We arrived at the hospital and the doctor pulled me aside.
"This is the last time we can treat him. We're running out of doctors and people just keep getting sick." He saighed
"I understand, but what do we do. We called his doctor and I don't think Jace can do that. For one he's missing an eye tooth, and I just can't see him being willing to do it." I sighed shaking my head with concern
"It's not like a movie Sean. He doesn't have to get it directly, as long as he gets it."
This felt like a movie. Like an apocalypse and a supernatural movie mixed together. Fuck in a movie our son would probably be dead already.
