Natasha's POV:
The sun was shining brightly in my eyes. I slowly opened my eyes as I took in my surrounding. I noticed that I was in a car with Bruce. I could hear the whooshing sound of the AC. Bruce was humming along to the song on the radio. I remembered Bruce talking something about taking a break from stress. So we decided to give his new car on a spin on the road. I cleared my throat which startled Bruce and he jumped slightly with a yelp. I started laughing. Bruce composed himself and cleared his throat, "So, you're awake. How was your nap?"
"It was fine." I shrugged it off.
"Okay."
Then we continued to make small talk until my stomach grumbled loudly. My cheeks turned in red in embarrassment as he started laughing. I covered my face with my red hair that made Bruce laugh louder. Some seconds later, I started laughing along with him. Moments later, Bruce stops the car in front of a small café and we grabbed our lunch.
An hour had passed since we finished our lunch and continued on the drive. The car was filled with an awkward silence and I didn't want to break it. I was feeling bored. So I pulled open the sunroof and put my arms in the air as my hair flew with cool breeze. I suddenly had an idea and decided to ask Bruce for the thing needed.
"Hey, Bruce!" I said with a poke on his shoulder.
"Yeah, Nat?"
"Give me your shirt."
"Why?"
"I just need it."
"Why?"
"Just give it."
"Okay."
Bruce puts the car on auto drive and takes off his shirt. He hands it to me. I knew that he was skeptical about my idea but he didn't question me anymore and continued on the road. I started waving the shirt in the air and closed my eyes for a few moments. The car suddenly shook a little as the wheels went over the speed bump and I let go of Bruce's shirt to grab the roof to steady myself.
The car continued to move smoothly as I realized something. I had let go of the shirt. I sat down quickly and closed the roof and continued looking on the road so that I did not have to make eye contact with him. As the awkward silence set into the car, this time Bruce decided to break the silence, "So, how are you feeling?"
My voice came out kind of shaky, "I'm feeling fine. What about you? Are you feeling relieved?" I immediately knew he would know something is wrong. I started to cuss at myself for the slip of the tongue.
"Nat, are you okay? Do I need to stop the car? Do you need water or something?" Bruce asked worriedly. I reluctantly turned my face away from the road towards Bruce's worried one.
"No, everything's fine." I said and grabbed the water bottle. I took a huge gulp of the water and gave a smile towards Bruce. I had a sneaking suspicion that Bruce knew something was wrong. It was confirmed after Bruce asked, "Did you do something?"
"Nat."
"Nat."
"Nat."
"I may or may not have let go off your shirt. And it may have flown away."
"What?" Bruce said with an exasperated look.
"I am sorry. I am sorry. Your shirt slipped out of my hand. I will buy you a shirt, I promise."
''Okay. But you owe me a shirt."
"Fine. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." I said with relief.
Then we continued with our silly banter as the sun set and the day turned into night. The dark sky was lit with the huge glowing moon decorated with little stars. I was getting bored again and this time I started to count the stars. The car slowed down and soon we were pulling into a parking lot of a diner. I got out of the car and stretched and was on my way until I noticed Bruce hadn't got out of the car. I went back to the car and pulled the car door, "Why aren't you getting out? Don't you wanna eat?"
Bruce threw a glare my way and pointed towards his bare upper body. I realized my mistake and was about to say something when Bruce interrupted me, "Bring me a burger and a cola."
"Aye aye, Captain." I left before giving him a sarcastic salute.
It took us less ten minutes to finish our meal. We didn't realize how hungry we were until after. The road trip was truly refreshing. It took off my mind of the last few weeks. As it was already 12 am and there was no hotel around, we decided to stretch the back seats of the car and share it for the night.
I lay down on the seats, thinking about the day gone. Few moments later, I saw Bruce in front of my face and his body pressed against mine. I could feel his breath against my face. His eyes were twinkling with mischief and he came closer. I was shocked and I asked, "What are you doing?" He didn't reply but continued to come closer. When his lips brushed against mine, I panicked and put my hands on his shoulder and pushed him back, "Uhuh. That is not happening."
He was shocked but he said nothing.
He took his arms from around me and went back to his sleeping place behind. We didn't talk for the rest time we were awake. But only if he knew, why I pushed him away. When he was about to kiss him, I thought of my husband. Though he was not here, somewhere in my conscience kissing Bruce felt wrong.
As I fell asleep, I felt Bruce putting his arm around my waist and snuggling into my red hair. Needless to say, I had the best sleep in the longest time.
Bruce's POV:
Nat was behaving weird.
I know I shouldn't have initiated the kiss without her consent. But her reaction is what threw me off. I was too concerned about her to feel the pain of the rejection. In the morning, I asked her if she had a nightmare and she denied. Maybe it was getting better. We grabbed breakfast from the same diner and went on our way back home with only two stops. The first one was for buying me a shirt and grabbing some snacks for the journey back home and the second one to have lunch. During this time, we talked very little and the car was filled with deafening silence.
By the evening, we had reached home. We decided to freshen up and have dinner. We said each short "Good night"s and went to bed. The day had gone surprising well with no arguments or nothing.
Who's to say the night won't go well. But that was just a thought.
My thoughts became true when I heard some sounds from Nat in the middle of the night.
