chapter 31
Caroline sat nervously under the large pine tree, the rock she was sat upon terribly uncomfortable. She fumbled with her cream-colored sundress and played with her golden rings and dangly bracelets. It was an hour passed the agreed-upon arrival and caroline was starting to lose hope.
"Any updates?" A thick accent asked as heels where heard clicking against the leaves and breaking twigs in half
"I haven't been able to track her down yet, she's Katherine Pierce, after all, world's greatest runaway." Caroline joked weakly, standing up to match the brunette's stance.
"We had a deal," Nadia's eyes held a glare as she turned, her bottled heels clicking against the floor as she talked
"We'll find her Nadia, I promise," Caroline said
"I know. I know we will." For once caroline saw compassion held in her brown eyes. She was vulnerable. Watching Nadia's eyes look vulnerable turned Caroline's mood into one more sour, more bitter.
She remembered who's eyes she wanted to see the vulnerable side of. The pair of blue eyes she desperately missed.
The person, she desperately missed.

Klaus grabbed a used brown paintbrush and pressed it gently into the blue glass bottle of paint. He lifted it out and made a streak against the black canvas. Slowly he coated the drawing in blue, covering in a thin layer the entire portrait. Adding with a thinner bristled brush he painted two hands, one with a silver twined bracelet and one with wolf-like nails. The hands seemed only separated by inches of space. So close but so far. The background was a collage of different landmarks. The Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower, The Bean, The pyramids, and every one of the seven wonders.
Klaus felt suffocated in that space. The space between their fingers. It held so much emotion. The man's hand seemed to be reaching, straining to touch the females, but hers was tentative and hesitant. The woman seemed afraid, petrified of all the consequences that would come if she simply allowed the man to touch her. Allowed the man to love her.
Laughing bitterly Klaus rolled his eyes at the similarities between the man in the drawing and himself. Both sought after things far beyond their reach. Things far too good for them
The blonde man knew the minute she entered the room. The whole aura of the small studio turned from gloomy but comfortable into a tense place.
"Love," Klaus said the pet name with such a coldness caroline felt shivers radiant up into her body. But she wouldn't back now. She couldn't.
"Nik..." caroline walked closer, touching her small hands against his broad shoulder.
"Do NOT call me that." Klaus hissed, moving away from her. His eyes held a wave of simmering anger but caroline could see past that. She saw the pain that held in those dark blue pupils. She saw the betrayal.
Her stomach twisted in guilt and she felt sick. She hated bat she caused him to feel that. Giving him a second to cool down caroline gazed into the large painting. She recognized the silver bracelet. Looking at her own wrist caroline saw that it matched her own that she wore daily. The one her father had given her before he...
Caroline pushed the thought back and focused her eyes on Klaus's.
"Klaus I'm sorry. I shouldn't have blamed you okay? I'm sorry, just please," caroline watched as his eyes glued into the wall behind her, "Please just say something."
"What is there to say? I'd take a gander that you'd said everything for the two of us." Klaus growled, pushing past her and walking to the door.
"Nik, please," Caroline mumbled, her eyes turning wet with unshed tears.
Klaus didn't even turn his head to look at her.
