Kaylee stared down at the river. The only ice was a stripe right under the waterfall, and it looked like it could break at the second they stepped on the ice. Kaylee her eyes roamed around as she swallowed past the lump in her throat.
''We have to cross now", Peter spoke up from beside her.
"Don't beavers make dams?" Lucy asked Mr. Beaver as she turned to him, him sort likely raising his shoulders.
"I'm not that fast, dear." he replied.
"Come on!" Peter commanded, closing the distance between the edge of the cliff.
"Wait, will you just think about this for a minute?!" Susan asked, actually she shouted.
"We don't have a minute!" Peter replied her.
"I'm just trying to be realistic." Her expression told her she felt a bit offended.
"No, you're trying to be smart", Peter snapped. "As usual!" Kaylee swallowed and took Peters arm.
"Come on. We don't have time to argue now." He glanced down at Kaylee for a second, but than he nodded at his girlfriend, taking Lucy's hand and working his way down to the river. As they were making their way towards the only half-frozen river, Kaylee felt a weird sensation in her stomach, a feeling that something horrible was going to happen.
She hurried after Peter, Lucy, Susan and the beavers, nearly sliding down before Peter held her up as his girlfriend blushed furiously. ''Wow, careful." She gave a nod and he continued down with Lucy.
When they finally reached down to the river, they stared over. The feeling that something was about to happen grew stronger. Then she heard howling and knew why she felt the way she did. The wolves were getting close as Peter took a step out on the ice which creaked and sank under him. He jumped back on the ground as Kaylee pulled him back towards her.
"Maybe I should go first", Mr. Beaver offered.
"Maybe you should", Peter agreed with wide eyes. Mr. Beaver took a tentatively step out on the ice. It creaked and groaned under him, but nothing else happened. Soon Peter followed after Mr. Beaver, and Lucy hang on his sleeves. This time, they stepped only where Mr. Beaver had safely crossed, and to their surprise it worked. Kaylee followed after them, and Susan behind her with Mrs. Beaver like the last.
"If Mum knew what we were doing-" Susan began, but she didn't finish. "Mum's not here!" Peter barked with a look at her.
"Stop it." Kaylee spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper as she walked on the ice. Peter looked as if he wanted to argue with her, but then changed mind and continued after Mr. Beaver with a last furious look at Susan.
Pieces of ice at the size of bibles fell from above them as Kaylee glanced up. Her heart sank in her chest. "Peter, above us!" she yelled out as his head flew up from the ice under his feet, to the ice above them.
"Oh no!" cried Lucy who had seen up, just like her oldest brother.
"Run!" Peter shouted, but it was easier said than done. They kept sliding and nearly falling over, but didn't reach over to the other side of the river before the wolves had boxed them in. One of the wolves in front of them barked, and Mr. Beaver snarled back. He tried to punch the wolf, but he ignored the show of bravery from the beaver and leapt on him.
Kaylee heard Lucy sob, and then Peter who drew his sword. she stared at him as he pointed it at the wolf closest to the group. Kaylee pulled Lucy from her brother as she held her closer, allowing the small girl to hide her face in Kaylee's coat. "Put that down, boy", she heard the first wolf say. "Someone could get hurt."
Kaylee turned around to look at the wolves behind them, realizing that the ice behind them had melted away.
"Don't worry about me!" Mr. Beaver told Peter while he tried to get away from the wolf holding him down. "Run him through!"
"Leave now, while you can", the same wolf continued, "and your brother leaves with you."
"Stop, Peter!" Susan cried, the other members of the group frowning as they turned their heads towards her. "Maybe we should listen to him!"
"Smart girl", the wolf remarked, still with a smile. "Kill him!" Mr. Beaver yelled from his place under the same wolf as before. "Kill him NOW!"
"Oh, come on", the first wolf said in a bored tone. "This isn't your war. All my Queen wants is for you to take your family and go."
"Look, just because some man in a red coat hands you a sword, it doesn't make you a hero!" Susan cried. "Just drop it!" Peter started to lower his sword. "Peter, Narnia needs you!" Mr. Beaver shouted. "Gut him while you still have a chance!"
"What's it gonna be, Son of Adam?" the wolf asked, still with that smile Kaylee hated so much. "I won't wait forever, and neither will the river." The waterfall groaned and creaked louder than before. Kaylee her eyes widened as a long crack ran through the middle of the ice which was left. Lucy let out a scream of fear, Susan's face was filled with anger, panic and maybe confusion, while Peter's eyes searched for a way out of our situation.
"Hold on to me!" he shouted as he lifted the sword and drove it into the ice right in front of him. Kaylee was too far from him as the sword made it's wait into the ice below them, Kaylee tried to grab him, but before she could the ice under her feet broke and she fell into the water. Her head splashed into the cold water the sensation hitting her as she swam back up. As fast as she got her head over water she took a deep breath. The cold air filled her lunges as she yelled out. "Peter!"
Before she knew it, a set of arms pulled her up, from the water. Her eyes met those of Peter as she held onto him as tight as she could, the block of ice moving them towards the shore. When they finally got to the shore, Kaylee was shivering as she was now soaking wet, but something pulled her attention away from the cold.
Peter was standing next to her, Lucy's coat in his hands ... but no Lucy. All of their eyes widened in fear as Susan yelled at her brother. ''What have you done?!'' She moved her hands to her mouth as she yelled out for her sister, the others following her lead. ''Lucy!''
After a long moment of suspense, Kaylee her head wiped around to the sound of Lucy's voice.
''Has anyone seen my coat?''
''Your brother has you well looked after.'' Mr Beaver answered as Peter put the coat over his youngest sister before everyone fell into a fit of laughter before they embraced each other.
''I don't think you'll be needing those coats any more!'' Mrs Beaver spoke up. Kaylee her head turned forwards as she smiled, spring was there.
