Prompt: Going on a double date, but messing up who's dating who

“Virgil!!!!!!” Roman’s sing-song voice broke through Virgil’s thoughts and caused him to spin towards the sound.

“What?” He mumbled. It was too early for such a sunny demeanor.

“Well…” Roman giggled, “you remember those two girls we met the other day? Well, I saw them again, and asked if they were interested in a double date.” Roman was practically vibrating.

“And?” Virgil sighed.

“THEY SAID YES! We’re going on a double date, Virgil! It will be good for you to get out of the house. Quick, pick out an outfit, they’ll be here in two hours.”

Virgil sighed again. It was bad enough he had to go on a date. But a double date with a girl and Roman. It was too much to handle. He had had a crush on Roman for a long as he could remember, and seeing him date a girl was heartbreaking. It wasn’t Romans fault, it wasn’t like he knew Virgil was gay, but Virgil had figured he had left enough hints over the years. With a final sigh, Virgil got up to pick out his outfit.

“We never knew you two were an item!”

Virgil was left reeling at the girl, Lyla’s, comment. He had figured the double date was between one of the guys and one of the girls. And by a glance at Roman, it was clear that was what Princey had thought as well. Virgil was conflicted. On one hand, he could tell the truth and get out of this situation sooner, or he could cover for Roman. As he looked at Romans face, he decided on the latter. Besides, wasn't this his true wish? To go on a date with his crush? Even if it was a lie, it was better than nothing.

"Uh, yeah. We have kept it a secret, since Roman here has a reputation" Roman glanced gratefully at the boy.

"Oh," said the other girl, who had introduced herself as Chloe, "I totally get that. Football players can be homophobic sometimes."

"Yeah," Roman finally spoke up, "I don't want to lose the scholarship or anything." His laugh was forced.

The rest of the night passed by smoothly. Roman, Virgil, and the girls connected over sports, theater, and classes. Virgil learned that Roman was actually incredibly good at math, which made him more attractive in Virgil's opinion. As the "date" went on, Roman started to pay more attention to Virgil. He would ask Virgil if he had enough water, or if he wanted to try any of Romans food. Everytime, Virgil politely declined. He could feel himself getting closer to Roman, and felt his crush on the boy begin to grow. But he decided he couldn't do that to himself or Roman, and tried to be quiet.

The check arrived, and Roman volunteered to pay it.

"Really it's no big deal, I'm the one who asked you both anyways." Virgil suspected he was trying to win them over, which he found disgusting.

"Oh no, we couldn't. We did impose on your date, plus Chloe here has a big appetite." The two girls laughed at Lyla's comment, and Virgil joined reluctantly.

"If you insist," Roman said, slowly putting his credit card away, "but I'm paying for the next double date." Vigil really hoped that Roman was joking.

"Well," Chloe looked at Lyla, "we should get going."

"Us as well," Virgil got up from his seat, and Roman followed. Without warning, Lyla and Chloe kissed each other, and then glanced at Virgil and Roman, as if expecting them to do the same. Virgil was taken aback, and glanced back and forth between the girls and Roman.

"You two don't really look close." Chloe noted.

"Oh no, we are very close, Virgil is just shy sometimes." Roman tried to play it off, but Vigil was offended. How dare his friend call him shy after dragging him on this double date. He would show Roman. In fact, he would kiss him right in front of the girls. That would show him.

Time seemed to slow as Virgil turned to his crush and leaned up toward his face. He took in his eyes and the curves of his face, stopping as he stared at the boy's lips. Finally, he leaned in all the way, and their lips connected. Virgil swore he could feel sparks fly, but it could have been the adrenaline. As the two broke apart, Roman held eye contact with Virgil for a bit too long.

The group walked out to their cars, and the girls said goodbye bye, and that they would have to do this again. Roman and Virgil avoided eye contact the whole time, including the car ride back to campus. Once they goT to their apartment, they both quickly went to their rooms. But as Virgil started to close his door, he heard Roman call his name.

"Hey Virgil?"

"Yes?" Virgil answered cautiously.

"When you kissed me… did you mean it?"

"I-" Virgil sighed, "yes. I did," He paused, but was met with silence, "I've liked you for a long time now. And you don't have to say anything, I get you wanted to date one of those girls. I won't mention it again."

"Virgil, when I asked to go on a double date with Lyla and Chloe, I meant for it to be a distraction. I really wanted to go on a date with you. I'm sorry I never realized how you felt."

"Oh," Virgil was shocked, "that's ok, there was no way you could have known. Well.. goodnight I guess?"

"Wait!" Roman grabbed the door before Virgil could close it.

"Yes?" Virgil slowly opened his door to gaze at the boy. Suddenly Roman was softly kissing him, cupping Virgil's face in his hands. At first Virgil was surprised, but then he realised what was happening and softened into Roman.

"I love you Vigil" Roman whispered between kisses. Virgil nodded.

"So when's the next double date?"
