Say Hello to Hairypuff

"Hm, what's that smell? It smells wonderful!" Julia sniffed the air, basking in the warm fresh smell of a pie. There was a sweet berry smell too, blueberries. "Smells like pies, too bad I can't have them." She sighed, Annika and Maggie, laughing beside her.

The Hufflepuff students followed a short plump lady with gray hair in a motherly bun. She had round glasses and deep chocolate-colored skin. She was the Head of Hufflepuff, Mrs. Violet, and was very kind, soft, and overall acted like a grandmother. When they first met Mrs. Violet, the old woman insisted the students call her "Mrs." instead of using professor.

Mrs. Violet smiled back at them, saying sweetly, "Hufflepuff shares the same hallway as the kitchens, and occasionally we'll be able to sneak a few snacks in for the common room." She chuckled, her round cheeks turning a rosy pink. The woman led the students to a pile of large barrels in a shadowy corner. "Here is the entrance to the Hufflepuff Common Room."

The students curiously looked at the barrels, wondering if the old woman was insane.

She noticed this, letting out a loud hearty laugh. She knocked on a barrel in the middle two from the bottom. Then the barrel moved, lifting itself to reveal an earthy cozy room. Mrs. Violet ushered the students to get inside, the kids aweing at the sight.

The majority of the room was honey-colored. There was highly polished wooden furniture covering almost every inch of the room, a couple of other Hufflepuff students buzzing in cushioned armchairs. It was warmly lit, the temperature a perfect sense of fall.

Mrs. Violet motioned to a moving portrait over a wooden mantlepiece of a woman with a welcoming smile. She was gently smiling down at the students, toasting a golden cup at them. "That is one of the founders of Hogwarts, Helga Hufflepuff."

"Whoa, this place looks amazing!" A girl with straight chin-lengthed black hair said, a butterfly barret holding back her bangs to show wonderous brown eyes. She was one of the Japanese exchange students. Her voice was timid and quiet, very much like a child coming out of their shell.

Mrs. Violet beamed, "Why, it's designed to make sure our students feel very much at home!" She turned around, motioning to a big round door. "That is the girl's dormitory, which from what I can see, will be the only one you'll be using." She sweetly smiled at the students.

Out of all things considered, no boys among the exchange students were sorted into Hufflepuff. It made it easier to assign rooms for the Hufflepuff students at least.

Julia made a quirky frown, blowing her freckled cheeks out in thought. She shyly raised her hand, then brought it down. But then she raised it again, deciding to ask a question.

Mrs. Violet nodded at her, "Yes, Julia was it?"

"Uh, yeah... Well, right now at least." She blushed, fumbling with her pale fingers. Her cheeks turned bright pink as she asked, "What if one of us were to, um, not be a girl?"

Mrs. Violet tilted her head, stray grays bobbing along. She pushed her glasses back up, "What do you mean?"

"Well, um," Julia looked at her friends. Annika and Maggie gave her encouraging nods. Julia let out a long deep anxious breath, walking over to the old woman and whispering something the other exchange students couldn't hear. The woman nodded along as Julia was quietly talking to her, then the woman's brown eyes widened before she quickly looked at the girl.

Julia stood there, face red and legs shaking.

Mrs. Violet smiled, putting a gentle hand on Julia's shoulders. She quietly replied back, "Well, I'll make sure to let Professor McGonagall know. And I'll make sure the girl's dormitory welcomes you no matter what you feel that day, I promise."

Julia quickly nodded, gratefully smiling at the kind-hearted woman. She quickly turned back, making her way to her friends. Annika and Maggie hugged Julia, Annika whispering in her ear, "You did a good job."

The other girls curiously looked at the American students but didn't say anything. They knew everyone deserved their privacy.

Mrs. Violet pulled out a piece of fold paper, unfolding it and smiling wide at the exchange students. "Now, for the remainder of the time, you have it to yourselves. Of course, I'll say who you'll be rooming with for the year. Your belongings have already been put into the rooms when you have arrived here at Hogwarts to make the move less stressful on you young children."

She cleared her throat, reading off the list:

"Let's see here since there are six of you in total there will be three per room. The first one will go to Margaret Boyle, Julia Hilbert, and Annika Willow."

The girls quietly cheered, excited that they were still together. It made sense, the school had said they were most likely going to stay with students from their country in the dorms.

"Next is Airi Moto, Ana García, and Emelia Ruiz." She smiled at the students, heading over to hug each and every one of them. "I wish you the best of luck. Now I have to go back and report to Professor McGonagall, so I hope you all have a wonderful first night." She quickly bid farewell to the girls then left the Hufflepuff dorm.

Maggie looked over at the other exchange students, waving at them. "Hi, I'm Maggie."

The exchange students looked at each other, waiting for one of them to say something. One of them, with tanned skin and shoulder-length wavy brown hair, cleared her throat. "Um, I'm Ana."

The other one, also tanned but with black hair that with the top half pulled back. She had the biggest eyes, innocent, and always looking for answers. She anxiously looked back and forth between the girls, gulping. Then she tapped her ears, showing them pink hearing aids.

"Are you, um, hard of hearing?" Maggie asked, trying to be as polite as possible.

The girl nodded, as she started to sign. But the confused faces on the girl's faces made her stop, her face blushing red. Annika looked around, quickly finding a paper and pencil nearby. Giving it to her, the girl wrote down, "My name is Emelia. I am deaf and use hearing aids. I can talk but not that good so I use sign language. Sorry for any inconvenience."

As they read it, Ana kindly said, "It's alright, we'll try our best as well to be able to communicate with you."

Emelia smiled brightly, quickly writing down, "I'm a Brazilian exchange student, though I was born in the US and my parents are Mexican. I just moved to Brazil to live with my relatives and was offered to come to Hogwarts."

"Wow, that's so cool!" Julia said, "Me, Annika, and Maggie are from the US."

Emelia nodded, "Yes, that is quite obvious. You all are very open which is good. You remind me of my brother's boyfriend."

"Do we?"

She nodded, though she didn't write anything else.

Then the Japanese student smiled, "I'm Moto, er, I mean Airi. Sorry, back where I come from we usually use our last names."

"That's no problem," Annika sweetly said.

Airi bowed, "I'm very excited to, um, get to know you all."

The girls nervously looked among themselves. Maggie quickly said, "You don't need to bow, Airi."

"Oh," Airi blushed, "My bad."

"No, no, it's okay." Maggie insisted.

Ana nodded, "Yeah, don't worry about it."

Julia laughed, "Ha ha ha, we're all just awkward kids."

They laughed, already feeling right at home in the Hufflepuff common room.
