7 years later
My muscles tensed as the alien deer I was stalking came closer to my hiding spot. I slowly crept closer, my padded paws made almost no sounds on the grass. My tail was curled tightly onto my back to avoid it rustling any bushes. I was down wind from the deer and its back was facing me.
I slowly crawled closer, my ears perked and pupils slitted. I froze a few meters from the target, any closer and it would notice me and get a head start. With a deep breath I launched myself out of my crouch position and startled my prey.
The six-legged deer made a noise of distress and ran to the tree's in an attempt to escape my advances.
Bad idea.
I put on a burst of speed and stretched my long legs to quickly close the distance. It broke through the trees as I leapt onto a thick branch and pounced onto my prey with all of my weight (which wasn't much). Its legs caved and it fell heavily onto the ground. I sunk my long fangs into its neck and granted it a quick, painless death. It would be cruel to make it suffer.
Seven years ago, a strange alien race took over Earth. It was a cruel race that killed most things in its way and had no respect for each other or the nature around them. They caused more pollution than humans!
Not even a month later, the race was wiped out by another. This race called themselves the Kymari. They we large humanoid creatures with green skin in several shades. They were a calm, but fearsome race that valued intellect to a high extent. They seemed to like nature and rebuild and cleaned the Earth. They stayed in large cities surrounded by tall walls and dense forests.
That's where most of the Kaydenstrids live.
Over the years the Kaydenstrids all went under drastic changes. The biggest being is that we grew big. Very big. I've grown from the size of a cat to the size of a large draft horse. It was a real shock when we realized that we were continuously growing. I'm on the smaller side!
We all lived together as a large pack for about a year. Then things started to change. It started when one of the males decided to try and woo one of the females. Long story short, due to the lack of females most of the males became jealous and a huge fight broke out. The few (me included) that didn't want to get involved left the pack and settled in another area.
We lost a few Kaydenstrids that day.
I gripped the carcass and started trotting my way to a large mountain not to far away. The large mountain was more of a tower made of some sort of black stone. All the packs lived at the base of the large structure. Even though some of us can't stand each other due to our instincts, we still lived close together because there is safety in numbers.
The mountain was perfect for protection and raising new pups. We learned the hard way that even though we were born from heat, our eggs can't survive in either the heat or cold. Strange enough, the caves at the base of the mountain were almost always the right temperature.
The base of the Black Rock came into view as I made my way through the bushes. The soft undergrowth abruptly changed to thick vines with large thorns dripping in a lethal poison. The area surrounding the Black Rock was like a protective fortress. The only threats that we needed to protect pups from were the large alien eagles.
I bent down and nimbly slipped through the vine wall. The thorns and poison harmlessly brushed against my smooth fur. I quickly broke thought the dangerous wall and immediately turned right, running along the edge of the wall and to my side of the territory. Everybody agreed to tolerate those coming back from hunts if they stuck close to the wall.
I might have been able to get through the wall, but my territory was on the side where the wall was to thick to move through. After a while of trotting and passing the area of a few other packs a small white husky came into view.
Melissa (now 19) grew as well and now her head reached a couple inches below my wither (shoulders). She was also one of the first Kaydenstrids to become mated. Around four years ago, me and her ran into a wandering Kaydenstrid who was close to her age. They quickly became friends and formed a pack bond, before I knew it that bond grew into a Amor bond (its French cause its more romantic).
We three were the smallest pack in the Kaydenstrids territory. That was until Melissa laid two eggs that hatched in the cave not too far from the ground. It was an easy jump for us adult Kaydenstrids but a heavy climb for any other creature. When Isaac and Hailey hatched, Melissa and William had their paws full so I hunted often to help them.
It was during this time that I felt left out.
I knew they had pups to take care of, but it still hurt when I felt excluded. Melissa didn't seem to noticed but she still made an effort to talk and spend time with me. Why not leave? Because I promised myself that I would support her when she first laid her eggs. I knew I would get on fine on my own, there were a few wanders around here, but I didn't know how they would adjust without me.
I dropped the carcass not to far from where Melissa was relaxing and made my way over to her. I nuzzled the top of her head in greeting and sat down next to her.
'How are your pups?' I asked and glanced up to the dark cave roughly forty feet above us. My large ears easily picked up quiet breaths.
Melissa hummed in greeting. 'Asleep after waking me up at dawn to play, I finally managed to get them back to sleep. I swear if I didn't have a white coat I would've been grey by now.'
I snorted in amusement and grinned when the husky sent me a mock glare. I could tell that she was tired so I ripped a piece of flesh from the deer and dropped it in front of her. She thanked me and quickly started on the flesh.
My tail raised and my ears twitched when I heard soft steps approaching us. I turned and saw William, a black Labrador hybrid, trotting his way over with another deer hanging from his jaws. He glanced at me before he dropped the meal next to mine. I sighed and stood up.
'You know, I'm sure two deer should be enough for all of us.' Melissa commented.
I stopped my quick stride and looked back at her with a deadpan expression. 'Mel, I would be surprised if anything was left over after your behemoths ate.' A bark of laughter followed me as I made my way back to the thinnest part of the thorn wall.
Time for me to get a meal.
