Chapter 4

12:45 May 18th Research Facility oF Genetic Mutation

Kal’s POV

I’m showing Nala around today and I'm excited but nervous. 

She’s like nothing I've ever seen before, I know it's only been a week but I'm really feeling this girl, I don't know what it is but it's something I've never felt before. I need to make sure I don't look like an idiot.

After I felt prepared enough to have her see me I walked to her room and saw something strange. Her face. She looked...worried but I'm still insanely attracted to her, she won't know that though.

“Hey Nala, are you ok?”

I noticed she took a moment to turn around but when she did it was like slow motion but I was still concerned by the look on her face. Although she said she was fine, I didn't believe her.

“Kal, I don't wanna talk about it can you just show me around. This is the first time being here I'm not 100% miserable just like 99.”

“Of course. Shall we go?”

I’ll get it out of her eventually.

After working here for about 5 years I know the best places to show on the tour and I think after I’ll take her somewhere special. 

“So this is the common area where our patients and researchers come to relax after long days, as you can tell we have tall ceilings and a lot of windows so the patients don't feel trapped. And bright colors so everyone feels happy here.”

“HAHA, PATIENTS are you kidding me? I didn't know that's what we were calling people who were kidnapped now n days.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say kidnapped-”

“Am I the only one who didn't come here against their will? Wow, I must be special.”

“You are.”

Damn I didn't mean to say that out loud

“Uh what was that Kal”?

“Nothing can we just keep going?”

Nala’s POV

I hope he doesn't think just because I’m being nice that I like him. I’m still trying to get this chip out and do what I gotta do.

“Yea-”

“Yo Kal hold on.”

So all of a sudden I got cut off by this voice and let me tell you I don't like being cut off but I was intrigued to know what they wanted. But when I turned around I saw this huge man-like way bigger than Kal. This man was like 6’5, caramel skin, and super built. His most noticeable features were his all-black eyes and these huge black wings on his back.

“Kal who is this?” He looked at me and smiled, while I just stared at his wings.

“Her name is Nala and she's new”.

“Ahh well it's nice to meet you Nala, I’m Nova.”

“Hi, it's nice to meet you too.”

Kal tapped me on the shoulder and when I looked at him he seemed kinda nervous.

“Nala, we really have to go now, there's something I gotta show you.”

“Ok let’s go. Nova was nice to meet you.”

He smiled and flew away which was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. Walking through the facility with Kal was nice. He's a funny guy and kept me entertained but I can't let him get close to me. On my tour, I saw the kitchen and other people's rooms and when we were passing a room I met two girls who Kal said were from Korea, King and Star. King was fair skin with long black hair and was more of a tomboy with an attitude. She had on these thick black shades that Kal explained were necessary for her to have because if she didn’t she would burn a hole in me. Star and blonde hair that clearly was died to be that way, and bright green eyes. She told me that she was a healer which made sense based on how extroverted she is. In fact, she invited me to sit with them at lunch tomorrow, which is great because I haven't really been eating since I’ve been here. Kal and I said bye to the girls and he continued the tour. He showed me the bathrooms and the gym which were both surprisingly nice. We walked outside and it was incredible to look at there were plenty of beautiful things to see. As we kept walking I noticed a group of guys but before I got to meet them Kal pointed me down a small path which made me kinda nervous.

“So Nala, remember the thing I wanted to show you?”

“Yeah.”

“Well...do you trust me?”

“Hell no.”

“Ok that's fair but for five minutes can you pretend like we met under normal circumstances and trust me. Please?”

“Ugh fine but just because I can't use my powers doesn’t mean I can't whoop yo ass.”

“Yes I know. Now just close your eyes.”

I closed my eyes and he led me down the path. To prevent me from falling he held my hand with one hand and put the other on my lower back that made me tense up but I didn't make him move it, I don't know why.

“Ok open your eyes.”

I opened them and covered my mouth with my hands. It seemed to be a man-made lake but it was beautiful, the water was crystal blue and the evening sun seemed to dance across it. There were Willow trees, Eastern Redbud trees, lavender, and sunflowers surrounding the lake. I was stunned.

“Was this all for me?”

“Yeah I begged for them to make it for you. I know that you're upset about your power limit but I thought having this would make you feel at home. And there's something else.”

“What else could there be?”

“Get in the water and you'll see.”

“Oook.”

I stepped in the water and there was a familiar glow around me so I swam deeper. Water began to swirl around and my tail was back. I’ve never been so happy, I got my tail back! I dove deep in the water that had to be about 30 feet. I came back up and did a dolphin jump and laughed. I tried to use my powers which still weren't working but I was still happy. 

“Kal wha how is this happening?!”

“I spoke to Dr. Reyes and he turned that part of your chip on so you could swim and maybe sleep here tonight”.

“Wow that's great thank you.”

 Maaan these people must be crazy. I'm already outside, I'm gonna get the hell outta here tonight.

“Yeah it is but the thing is since you can have your tail back there has been something added to your chip’s code.”

“And what's that?”

“An electric shock will shoot through your body if you get near exit doors or if you disrespect anyone of authority.”

Damn it's like these people read my mind. Holdup is that another part of this chip? I can't even think what I want to think.

“Oh.”

“Yeah so just keep that in mind. I’ll leave you alone to enjoy yourself.”

“Thanks Kal I will, bye.”

“Bye Nala sweet dreams.”

“Sweet dreams Kal.”

As I watched Kal walk away I thought over the day and all the people I met and I didn't have that many negative things to say and I normally do. I floated on my back and watched the sunset. I think I'm starting to not hate this boy. Today wasn't half bad. 

Kal’s POv

Oh wow. I spent the whole day with Nala and it was amazing. We didn't argue and we had genuine conversations. She didn't let me in as much as I hoped but I get it. I just gotta work harder. I think I'm really starting to like this girl. Today wasn't half bad
