Hey readers, sorry for the break in updates had a bit of a manic couple of days, but I'm back!
After the intense training session, everyone decided to take full advantage off the sunny day and go for a dip in the lake to cool down.
Sam let the others sprint ahead, happy to bask in the sunshine as she walked. She always loved the feel of the outdoors, the breeze through her hair or the heat on her skin or the freshness of the rain. Honestly, whatever the weather she always preferred being outdoors. It helped her think, and it gave her a peace of mind that she could never quite reach indoors, where she felt trapped in by the walls.
Arriving at the lake she took in the scenery, the breath-taking backdrop of the mountains against the lush forest with its vibrant green leaves, and the cloudless azure skies above. The lake shone, its shimmering surface reflecting the outline of the trees. Through its crystal clear blue waters, Sam could almost make out the bottom, lined with lake weed and home to thousands of brightly coloured fish.
Nearly everyone was already in the water, swimming towards the central platform, a wooden area raised from the water, from which it was tradition to push people into the water until a lone victor remained. As Sam watched, the swimming figures reached and clambered on to the platform. They goaded each other, threatening advances and feigning moves until someone finally took the initiative and made the first push. Instantly all hell broke loose. Loyalties lost in an instant as friend turned on friend and wolves rammed into each other, desperately trying to stay upright. From the shore, Sam roared with laughter at the sight of the flailing limbs and determined faces of those on the platform.
She didn't often join in on the fun, she didn't feel comfortable enough with most of the wolves. She only trusted a few people, such as Liam and Aiden, and even then she wasn't one for rough games with them. She was happy to engage in verbal fights and mockeries, but she was competitive, and physical games often got out of hand when she engaged.
Quickly stripping her clothes, she threw them onto the sand before diving into the clear water. Coming to the surface, she gasped at the coldness and set off to swim a couple of laps, hoping the exercise would warm her. As she swam she watched the antics on the platform. Kira had been the victor of the first round, and she roared her delight, a wide grin plastered on her face as she looked down at the bedraggled faces of her victims bobbing in the water around her. On the second round, she desperately attempted to defend her title, fighting with a renewed viciousness but this time was conquered by Obi. Despite being the oldest member of the group, Obi was always the centre of any activity. He was young at heart, and although weaker than the other, younger wolves, his experience, determination and speed made up for this disadvantage. Sam cheered him from the water as his eyes glittered with happiness.
After the second round, most wolves seemed to grow tired off the game and drifted towards the shore, lying on the sand to sunbathe. The younger girls remained on the platform, and Sam swam towards them. Due to the nature of the Rogue Pack, there were very few female members, as female rogues were much more uncommon. Packs were very male-driven generally, and so females were under the control of their mates and Alphas. Females received little training, meaning that although they were statistically more likely to run away from their packs, they were less likely to remain rogue as they were often forced to return to their pack, forced into another pack, or captured by the DIR. Including Sam, there were only four female members of the Rogue Pack; Kira, Varshini and Obi's mate Béa, an older female who insisted on being a mother to all the pack's members.
As Sam approached the platform, Kira and Varshini waved her over. She clambered on.
"... it just sort of hurts every time I see him, especially when he's only wearing those swim shorts, but I know it was the right thing to do." Sam just caught the end of the conversation. Assuming they were talking about Liam she kept quiet, knowing that being friends with both of them meant she shouldn't put her foot where it didn't belong.
"I guess that's a good thing, if you know it was the right thing to do then you know that it won't be painful for too long," Kira replied.
"Yeah I guess so," Varshini sighed, turning to Sam. "Has Liam said anything to you about... you know... our breakup?"
"He-he... he did mention it... and said that you had initiated it. He seemed quite sad about the whole situation really," Sam didn't want to say too much, for fear of breaking Liam's trust. But she knew that if she pretended that he hadn't mentioned it that would just make him seem shallow, like the break-up hadn't mattered to him.
"But I don't want to get involved. I love both of you, and refuse to take sides," Sam declared, hoping to make her preference clear, and demonstrate that she didn't have loyalties.
"Although I'm here to listen if you do need to talk about it."
To be honest, she was lying a little to say she refused to pick a side. Sure she wouldn't support either Liam or Varshini more than the other, but if either of them told her that they couldn't abide by her being friends with the other, then she already knew who she would choose. I mean I've been friends with Liam for over two years now, and he's the closest friend I have. I wouldn't, and couldn't, just abandon him. But she did really like Varshini, and saw a good friendship there. So as long as neither of them went full revenge mode, she could easily entertain the two friendships separately. At least that was the plan.
"Thanks, that means a lot Sam." Varshini reached over, pulling Sam into an embrace.
Beside them, Kira groaned.
"What's up Kira?" Sam detached herself slightly from Varshini's arm so that she could turn her attention to Kira. Her eyes were glazed over as she stared at the beach. Following her gaze, Sam spotted the male wolves playing football in the sand. They were all bare-chested, their abs glistening in the sunlight as water streamed from their hair. It dripped onto their solid shoulders, weaving its way across the ridges of their muscles. Their skin shone.
"Why the fuck are they all so hot, it's literally so unfair. Especially when I'm lying here just desperate to climb any one of them. Fuck I hate the heat!" Kira moaned.
Sam giggled, she was right, they truly were gorgeous specimens. Her rigorous training made certain of that. But she'd be lying if she said they were the only ones who caught her eye. Turning her head, she watched Kira as she watched the boys. She was utterly stunning, with her long raven hair and bronzed skin. Her dark, doe eyes complemented her long lashes, making her look sweet and innocent. Sam let her eyes roam Kira's face, taking in her high cheekbones and dimpled cheeks, before letting her gaze linger lower, travelling down her body.
Sighing she tore her eyes away and relaxed onto her back, closing her eyes against all temptation, holding Varshini slightly closer in her arms.
