There was a pregnant pause before he took a deep breath of his own and took my hand in his leading me to the chairs in the garden. "Before I tell you about werewolves specifically, I'm sure you picked up that there are other supernatural beings," I nod my head as that was one of the questions I had prepared to ask. I studied him and wondered if I'd ever noticed the aura of power that surrounded him, as if he could silence a room just with his presence.
"The other Supernaturals are witches, wizards, mermaids and vampires." A memory comes to mind of other stories that my grandma had told me growing up, I didn't remember the specifics, they weren't told to me as much as the stories of El Chupacabra, none of them really stuck to me like that one did either. The one I remembered the most is El Hombre Lobo, the man who changed into a wolf, the possibility fascinated me when I was younger but faded as I grew up and my belief in such things slowly dwindled.
All I could remember was that it was that from studying the werewolves that El Chupa learnt to control the beast inside, it had been almost a thousand years since the wolves were subjected to the control of the moon. They taught this to every generation until now where only the first change is triggered by a full moon.
"As a supernatural being there are ways to sense when you're in the company of other supernaturals, once you focus you'll be able to sense it, for werewolves it's smell, every being has a distinctive scent." I nodded, taking in the information and tried to think about what I wanted to know from him.
"Tell me about werewolves." He takes my hand in his, pausing for a moment before his fingers draw circles on the back of my hand that leaves a trail of tingles everywhere he touches, not as strong as when I woke up but still more prominent than before.
"Werewolves live in packs, we have our own hierarchy starting with the Alpha and Luna at the top, currently that's my parents, then the Beta and Beta female, the Gamma and Gamma female, pack warriors and pack members."
"That's why you live in the forest." It was a statement not a question, I'd always wondered why they chose to live there.
"Yes, it means that we can shift without worrying about humans seeing us and it's just where we're most comfortable."
I hesitate before I ask the next question, the one I wanted to ask first but hesitated. "Why do I feel a connection to you? I've always liked you, but this is something different, I've never felt a connection with anyone like this." I turn away, feeling awkward after telling him that I liked him.
"We're soulmates, every werewolf has one, and though it's never been heard of for the Moon Goddess, or your people just call her the Goddess, to pair werewolves with any other species other than occasional humans and our own. We're destined for each other, the perfect match." He paused and starred at me. Letting the information that we are destined to be together soak in.
I smile since I'd never have thought that he'd like me. "Does everyone find their soulmate once they turn eighteen?"
"No one finds their mate before their eighteen and both of them have to be eighteen, but for the wolves whose mate is someone in their pack whoever turns eighteen first can almost sense their mate, but it's not confirmed until the other wolf turns eighteen. It's hard to explain the feeling but when I looked into your eyes it was like I found a piece of me I didn't know was missing."
He turned away, took a deep breath and then continued. "Sometimes wolves wait years for their mate, which is why some choose to travel to different packs once they realise there's no connection to anyone else. Wolves like Liam and I are lucky, to not have to search for our mates and that we already knew ours."
