This early morning am taking strides along with Alex up the hill again.
"Why do you think this trail ain't safe as Mr Smith says?" I ask Alex.
"Am not the one to tell," he replies.
Alex keeps giving me half baked answers from the very start and am left wondering why would he ask for my friendship as he'd asked earlier on if he wasn't willing to say anything to me.
Then the date am to have with Alec comes to mind.
"Please don't go," he says.
" What! how did you know."
" Ar-hh you said something like that earlier on,"he gambled. I don't remember telling anyone about the date but most likely I said during the strides because the're things I say when am on a run and never recall. My mind is diverted always to running and not my surroundings.
"Okay."
" But please don't go,"he continues.
"What's with you," he doesn't have to choose whom I go out with or not just by his stupid jealousy.
" I don't like that guy."
"You don't have to like him for me to accept your approval," I reply increasing my strides. And now we're way too ahead.
The bushes are now thicker and the trail gets thinner."Let's be going back, the sun is rising. Remember the store is to open by 9am," he stops and I agree.
We walk in silence back. My mind drifts back to Alec. His lips.
"Omg kath please forget that guy," he startles me.
"What's with you!" I shout. "Whenever Alec comes to my mind, you seem to know," screaming. I run ahead leaving him behind.
The store was opened by Ms Smith this morning as I took a shower, did the dishes and laid my bed neat ready for the day.
"About your date, what are you gonna wear?" Ms Smith begins the topic. I'd forgotten telling her even but probably I did during our excitement away from the theatre.
"Am not gonna make it," I reply.
"Why shouldn't you,you can't turn down Alec!" She says startled.
"Okay," giving in. I had no choice here and it wouldn't kill me just having this one date with Alec. His really attractive, actually extremely attractive if I may clarify. The sound of his deep voice, the way his lips move as he talks. His words seem calculated at all times like its recorded in a cassette. His perfect jaw line.
The pale skin.
And I feel my skin go cold thinking of it.
