Chapter 21

I wake up earlier than I normally do. It's 6 am and training starts at 7 so I have an hour to get ready and eat something. I get up, my eyes still groggy, and grab some clothes. I go to take a shower, hoping that if I hurry no one else will wake up and steal the shower. I've seen the Dauntless bathrooms on visiting days, and I'm grateful that they included walls and doors. I finish showering and change into some tight black jeans and a black tank top, wearing the same shoes as before. Turns out Dauntless has a point system, which you can then use to get more clothes and tattoos, and other stuff like that. I get out of the shower and quickly run my fingers through my hair to dry it. I then comb it out and leave it down for today. I quickly brush my teeth and fix up my hair one more time to make sure it looks decent. It's long and kind of wavy, making it not look too messy. When I finish, I quietly go back into the dorm and see Jake, sitting on his bed. I walk over to my bed and say "Morning" to him on the way. He smiles and says "Good morning" while rubbing his eyes. "Why are you up so early?" He asks

"I just woke up, and couldn't go back to sleep," I say. He nods and I ask "Are you going back to sleep, we have like an hour until training starts".

"No, I'll get up. I might as well shower" I nod and he stands up, stretching a little

"Want me to grab us something to eat?" I say quietly.

"No it's ok, I'll be quick and I'll go with you" He goes to shower and I wait, sitting on my bed. I comb my hair out with my fingers until then and stare at the floor. Eventually Jake comes out, and he's wearing a black shirt with black jeans.

"Ok, you ready?" I ask. He nods and we head down to the dining hall. The workers are already awake by now so we're able to get some breakfast. I get a blueberry muffin with hot cocoa and Jake gets the same thing. We sit down and talk quietly even though no one's around, worried that we might echo.

"So, are you ready? Today's the day." Jake says biting into his muffin.

"Yeah, I think so. I would rather die than be factionless honestly" I say

"Really? You would rather die than not be Dauntless?" He asks

"Mhm," I say "I don't wanna spend my entire life begging for leftovers and having nothing to do all day," I say

Jake nods, and we continue to talk some more, and when the 30-minute mark passes people start to rush in. Katherine smiles and comes over to where we're sitting while grabbing some food on the way.

"Hey guys," Katherine says smiling.

"Hey," We both say back. I notice that when she smiles at Jake it's different. I just can't pick up on how. I let it go, and eventually, Dean comes to sit at our table. I don't get why he sits with us though, it's not like he doesn't know anyone else here. Then his other friends sit down too. They're both from Candor too, and they look like brothers, with Olive skin, and brown hair.

One of them sits down next to me, a little closer than needed, and says "Hello".

"Hi," I say back.

"What's your name?" He asks

"Rose," I say "What's yours?" I ask

"Liam. This is my brother Matthew" He says nodding in Matthews direction. Matthew looks over and waves at me smiling, and I give him a nod saying hi.

"Are you ready for training today?" Liam asks.

"Mhm, I think so," I say, trying to scoot away little by little trying not to be rude.

Katherine then tries to get into the conversation -probably noticing I'm not sure what to say- "Yeah I think it's going to be f-"

"That's nice," Liam says cutting her off. I get a little uncomfortable and see Dean smiling. Why does he care?  I see Jake trying not to glare at Liam, failing. I decide to just keep eating and see Liam do the same. He still keeps glancing over at me while I'm talking to Jake or Katherine and I just pretend not to notice. I then look at my watch and see that it's 6:50.

"Jake, Katherine, training starts soon we should get going," I say

They nod and we get up, throwing our garbage in the trash. I then notice that Dean, Liam, and Matthew are following behind us but I try to ignore them. We all walk over to the training room silently. When we get there we see Tobias and Eric standing there, preparing.

"Initiates," Eric says "Get ready to go through hell."
