Chapter 27 (part 2)

"Marcus is coming to Dauntless," Jake says

"What? Are you kidding?" I ask

"No, apparently some Abnegation leaders are coming to help the elderly Dauntless. That's what I heard on the news" Jake says

"Ok, it's fine. I'll just keep away from him as best I can" I say smiling and getting up. "Wanna get some breakfast when Katherine gets out?" I ask

"Ya, of course," Jake says smiling. I know he's worried though.

Katherine gets out of the shower and we're about to head down when she says "Oh wait. Jonathan told me to wake him up if I was up already". She goes over to where Jonathan is sleeping and shakes him gently.

"You and Jonathan, huh?" I say jokingly

"Haha, ya," She says smiling. I know she's happy.

Jonathan wakes up rubbing his eyes. "Oh, morning guys," He says. He gets up and kisses Katherine on the cheek. "You guys can get going down if ya want. I can join after I'm done showering" Jonathan says.

"Ok, we'll see you down there then," Jake says.

We walk down and sit at the table. We're a little later than usual since we waited for Katherine to finish showering. By now people are already sitting there, but we have at least half an hour to eat. We grab our food and sit down, and just continue to talk. Then I see it. I see a blur of gray Abnegation robes, and towards the front is Marcus. This can't be happening right now.

"Oh god," I whisper, looking down.

Jake, who's sitting next to me, looks over at me and then looks up to where the Abnegation is. All the Dauntless are now looking at the Abnegation. I keep my head down, hoping he won't see me and when I glance back up they're gone. I let go of the air I didn't even know I was holding in. Then all of sudden, I feel a hand on my shoulder. It's not Tobias's or Tris's because there's are gentle, this hand feels forceful. Marcus. I hesitate in turning, but even before I do Uriah and Zeke are already coming across the room.

"Don't even touch her," Uriah says while clenching his teeth. Marcus puts his hands up and backs up like he's about to get arrested. I get up and turn around and look him straight in the eye.

"What are you doing here?" I ask, whispering.

"We came to help the Dauntless Elders. I found it so horrible that they couldn't fend for themselves." He says

"Oh cut the crap, Marcus. You're only here because the Erudite released the articles and you want to help your reputation" I say

"Think as you may, but I'm here to help," He says. I don't even bother saying anything against him. "I see you've...changed," Marcus says

"You mean I've found a place where people don't hit me with a belt and kick me to the ground out of spite, ya you could say I've changed," I say back

Everyone shifts when I say that sentence and Marcus pushes his luck.

"Don't get smart with me," Marcus says quietly

"Or you'll do what?" I say testing him.

He goes silent at that. He knows there's nothing he can do anymore to hurt me. At that moment I see Tobias walk into the hall behind Marcus. I look over at him, and he immediately stops. Marcus then turns around and see's him. Exactly what I didn't want. Zeke and Uriah shift their weight, and Marcus calls Tobias over.

Tobias walks over to where Marcus is standing and crosses his arms.

"What are you doing here?" Tobias spits at Marcus. He tries to be quiet so the others don't hear. It's not about keeping the secret that we're siblings for initiation anymore. It's about Tobias not wanting to reveal that he was abused too.

"I was hoping my son would greet me a different way at least," Marcus says

By now all of the people who sit at our table have gotten here, so Dean immediately says "Son?"

"Ah. Seems like my own kids haven't told their friends about me now have they," Marcus says "They haven't even told their friends that they're siblings". Marcus thinks he's won now. Just by revealing I'm Tobias's sister?

"We're not your kids anymore Marcus," I say

Then Tris comes and stands next to Tobias. Again, Marcus acts as nothing happened.

"Beatrice? Darling is that you?" Marcus says too kindly

"Yes, it's Tris now," She says

"How are you dear?" Marcus says

"Fine" Tris says swallowing

"That's good to hear. I have to return to the Abnegation now, but it was nice seeing you again" Marcus says "You two as well" Marcus says, looking at Tobias and I. I glare at him and he walks away.

"Can I talk to you?" I say to Tobias. He nods and we walk to the other side of the dining hall. "I'm sorry," I say.

"What? Why?" Tobias says

"I should have just lied at Candor and Dauntless yesterday. If I did this wouldn't have happened." I say

Tobias says "Well you can't lie. It is Candor or Dauntless. It was either that or having to take off a piece of clothing. You made the right decision (It was so freaking hard to write that)." Tobias laughs.

I laugh a little too and say "So, your not mad?" I say

"Well, I'm mad at Dean for asking that in the first place. And at Erudite for posting that article. And at Marcus for showing up. So, everyone but you" He says smiling.

I laugh and we hug. At least now we don't have to hide the fact that we're siblings. I head back to the table and am met with confused looks and stares. This is gonna be a long day. And we haven't even fought yet.
