'Ugh... I feel like I've been hit by a train'My body ached everywhere, still recovering from the poison I had ingested. I was awaken by the sun, very lightly beaming through the curtains. As I sat on the edge of the bed to grab my robe, I realised that I wasn't in my bedroom.
'What time is it ? Where am I ?' I wondered before remembering last nights events. I looked around me, trying to recollect every thought before calming down.
"Right... Thomas's room...Wait ! Where's my bag ?" I screamed while jumping out of the bed. I searched through the bedroom but couldn't find it. I put my trench coat on and ran out into the corridor. I got to the main room where I saw Sir Thomas, sitting at the table, writing something down on a piece of paper. Next to him was a tray containing bread and some fruit.
"Good Morrow Lady Emma, did you sleep well ? Would you like some breakfast ?" he asked politely. I was surprised to see him up that early, already hard at work.
"Good day to you Sir Thomas, and yes I did sleep quite well. May I inquire after my satchel ?" I asked innocently. Sir Thomas clearly already noticed something unusual about me, and I didn't want to fuel his suspicions.
"Yes, I placed it on this seat." he replied, pointing at the chair next to him, without looking away from his work. I put it on my lap and quickly took a look inside.
'Phew everything's here !'
I sat down next to him, and took some of the food laid on the table.
'Em... I think there's no risk in eating it, since he had ingested it himself.' suggested my mind.
Right. I can trust Sir Thomas, and he even respected my private stuff. Not a lot of people would've done that.
I wanted to ask him so many questions, especially about his lost friend. This can't be accidental, there has to be some sort of explanation to his disappearance...He was focused on what he was working on. After a few minutes, I decided to break the silence.
"Sir Thomas... I do apologise for interrupting you, while you are working, but..."
"And yet, here you are Lady Emma, interrupting me."
'God ! He can be a pain in the ass !'
"Forgive me, but I have some questions that need your attention and honest responses."
"You wish to know, why I have saved you at the feast ?"
"Yes... along with other things."
"Well, Lady Emma, I simply do not condone this kind of behaviour. There is a great deal of misconduct amongst the youngsters at court. His Majesty's overlooks it, as he considers that everyone should amuse themselves, but I disagree. Recklessness leads to debauchery and stupidity." he said before stopping. He looked like he hesitated on continuing, clearly concerned about how to sound disinterested, "I simply wanted to spare you, the discomfort of having someone force themselves on you, while you were clearly not in your right mind."
"I did not drink heavily that night."
"That thought did not cross my mind Lady Emma. You were poisoned."
"How did you come to know this ? And what made you come and save me ?"
He continued on explaining, what he had found out about Maggie and the two men. They were all going to be questioned today and probably hanged.
"His Majesty loathes any kind of poisoning, and he might wish for them to be tried soon"
I simply nodded, still trying to understand why Maggie would do this. Why she would risk her life to get rid of me.
