Chapter 1: Selection

“Wake up. Wake up, girl! … What was her name?”

“Angelika, Dr. Maldiva.”

“Wake up Angelika. You slept long enough. Ah finally opening your eyes. How do you feel?”

When she opened her eyes she saw a beautiful slim woman with dark coloured skin and black hair tied back in a knot. She wore a red coat and looked like a doctor. She smiled friendly and spoke with a very soft comforting voice.

“I am feeling dizzy, guess I am still sleeping. Where am I?”

“Don’t you remember? Think back, try to remember.”

Angelika sat up and took a look around. Nothing familiar caught her eye. Obviously she was on a medical station, but did not feel any pain. She still knew her name and age, address and then it hit her. “I am on a ship, right?”

“Yes. I am glad the cryo sleep did not affect your memory.”

“Wait, I am not fully awake. Cryo sleep? How long?”

“Twenty years, as I told you before you entered the cabin.”

“Cabin? Ha! More like a tuna can!”

“Your humour seems in tact as well. Welcome back.”

With those words she left. Angelika knew Dr. Maldiva was a good one and meant it friendly, but she still felt traumatized and shocked. She thought to herself: “Twenty years have passed and I was sleeping in a kind of coma. Everyone I knew is either dead or in his/her 40s or even 60s. I am totally on my own and my life will never be the same again, or even close to it. I did not choose this journey, I was chosen. Like hundred thousands other humans I was chosen by these Aliens, that looked like us. We were “chosen” or better to say selected to accompany them to their worlds. No we are not meant as food, at least not that I know. We are chosen to become the base of their society structure. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well as long as one avoids mentioning that their society structure and most of public work is based on slavery.” She was still dizzy and felt the need to take a walk and find happier thoughts. When she stood up she felt strange and different. She looked down on her body to investigate and started gasping for air, being totally astonished and baffled. Again her first thought was she might dream. The Dr. saw her and came over looking concerned on her irregular breathing.

“What did you do?”

“We made some physical corrections and improvements.”

“Hell, I lost all overweight I had. I mean, thank you, but what did you do? I mean I feel stronger. I do not feel any pain in my back. Not anymore. It is….”

The Dr. smiled at her positive surprise. “We corrected your weight and stimulated your muscles. And we healed the injuries on your back, knees, left elbow and shoulders. But be careful. You still have a long way to go to be fit. Your condition is much better than before but you must train very hard and improve your bodily condition to ensure the injuries do not come back. Now, wait for the other three here then we will take you to your rooms. Your training starts tomorrow. Understand?”

“Yes Doctor”, she said with a bright smile, ”thank you very much.” With a nod and a smile the doctor was gone. Angelika stood there unable to believe that she was healthy again. When she turned 18 she started to have physical problems and enough bad luck to have one incident after the other. It led her to a state of weakness that she never thought would be possible.
