twenty - rich

Layla had been guilted by Kiara to come to John B's house and hang out for a few hours. Of course JJ was there, but Kie promised she would keep him in line. Layla only went because Kie seemed like she was in shitty mood.

It only caused everyone else to be in a more shitty mood after JJ sort of blew up. John B explained how Sheriff Peterkin promised she would help him if he stayed out of the marsh for a few days. JJ didn't like this idea, and it pissed him off in response.

He began a tirade about how him and John B had nothing to lose, so they shouldn't obey her orders. Pope was the "golden boy" and Kie was "rich as fuck anyway."

Layla let out a sarcastic laugh, "And what about me?" She noticed how JJ failed to mention her in his ranting and raving.

JJ shook his head, "What about you?" JJ questioned in response.

"Well, I'm not included in the group for or the group against, so where's the middle ground?" Layla questioned JJ. She was still slightly upset due to events from the past few days, and she was going to pounce on any chance to attack JJ that she could.

"We all know you're rich, Ms. Flora just acts like you aren't," JJ explained. "You've got a good life, Layla, why would you risk a thing at all?"

Layla glanced up at JJ. He had resentment in his voice; JJ had the notion that money equated a good life. While it sure did help, the two didn't go hand in hand. And in his tone he carried the attitude of bitterness.

"We aren't rich, JJ." Layla didn't express much emotion in her voice.

He smiled sarcastically, his hands up in surrender. "'Scuse me, ahem, 'comfortable.'" His words were purely mocking the brunette as she sat.

"You're a dick."

Kie has forcibly separated the pair, electing to take JJ with her to pick up some lunch. She promised she would talk some sense into him in response to his behavior lately. Layla had still failed to tell her about him showing up at her home.

Due to the current dynamic of the relationship with JJ, she couldn't tell anyone about what was going on with her father. JJ was the only one who even sort of knew what had happened in her previous years. She knew, however, she was sort of lying to herself by believing she would unload onto JJ. No one knew about her father and she didn't plan on changing that anytime soon.

She also wasn't sure if her and JJ were going to reach any kind of a truce anytime soon. As if the original act wasn't bad enough, he had shown up at her house and belittled her feelings. They then exchanged fighting words, further increasing the tension. The world sort of felt like it was shrinking around her.

When Kie and JJ arrived back at the Chateau, Layla kept her distance and sat next to John B while they ate the pizza she had brought. JJ would glance up at her every few minutes as she kept her glance averted and her mind occupied by the beer she was consuming.

The night began to wind down with everyone chilling out in various spots on the patio. Layla was drunk beyond belief, mostly to forget. It was the only way she knew how.

JJ on the other hand was seated across from her, the most sober he had been in his entire life probably. The more intoxicated the girl got, the easier she would be to talk to.

Layla rose from her seat, glancing around at everyone. "It's probably time I head home." Her keys were dangling in her hand.

JJ glanced at Kie worriedly, knowing Layla wouldn't listen to JJ telling her to not drive.

She muttered her goodbyes, everyone failing to notice she planned to operate a vehicle. JJ decided to step in, following her as she headed to the car.

He stepped in front of her, blocking her path. She paused in her tracks, crossing her arms over her chest. "JJ, get out of my way."

"Yeah, Lay, what're you gonna do?" JJ challenged, "You gonna kiss me?"

Not only was she annoyed about his comments from earlier in the day, she was upset about the way he had acted days prior. "Fuck you, JJ."

He shook his head. "You think I'm letting you drive and possibly kill yourself?" he fired. "Absolutely not." He extended a hand. "Keys."

She let out a laugh. "Yeah, right."

"I'm taking you home, Layla," he replied, his words sharp. His hand was still out. "Keys, now," he ordered. "Come on, I won't even talk to you."

She took a deep breath, knowing deep down he was right in not allowing her to drive. She wouldn't admit it to him, however. She handed him her keys with a small exhale, climbing into the passenger's seat of her unlocked car. He climbed into the driver's side, starting the car up and heading towards her home.

The ride was silent as promised, JJ pulling into her driveway and exiting the car. She did as well, the boy locking it behind them and passing her the keys back. "Thanks," she muttered to him.

"I'm gonna watch you go in and then I'll head back towards John B's," JJ explained, his hands finding his pockets. His eyes were downcast.

She took a deep breath. "JJ-"

"Don't, Layla," he began. "You were right. I was wrong. I'm really wrong. And I'm sorry."

Layla sighed heavily. "You can stay on the couch, JJ." That was all she said as she headed towards the home with her keys in tow, unsure if JJ was following.
