five - surf's up
The day had brought the entire group the Chateau. Kie was seated on the porch, tapping rhythmically on the wood with two rounded drumsticks she had found in a drawer in John B's home.
"What do you guys wanna do today?" Layla questioned, her back pressed against the arm of the chair and her legs folded in her lap.
"What you people always do," Pope replied, his tone almost bitter. "Drink, smoke, repeat." He glanced at JJ as the words came out of his mouth.
"Pope, your pick up lines are about dead bodies," JJ fired back. While that had no correlation to JJ's substance abuse disorders, it was still amusing. And JJ wasn't wrong.
"No, Lay is right," Kie explained. "We can't do this all day."
"Wanna crush some waves today?" John B asked, setting his glass bottle down.
A small smile came to JJ's face. "Hell yeah."
"Hell yeah," Layla seconded. While surfing wasn't exactly a leisure activity as much as a total body workout, she enjoyed it. Growing up in the Outer Banks, you either surfed or you didn't have friends. There was no in-between.
"Hell yeah," Pope and Kie agreed.
"We can take my car, we'll fit the boards," Layla explained.
"Meet at the Lincoln in fifteen," JJ called, everyone rising to their feet and springing into action. "JB and I got the boards."
Layla and Kie headed towards the bedroom where the slept. "You got an extra t-shirt?" Lay asked. "I didn't bring one big enough."
"Fuck, I don't think I have one either."
Something the girls typically did was wear a t-shirt over their swimsuits while they surfed in order to protect their skin from sticking.
"I'll go ask John B," Layla decided. Kie nodded, reaching into her bag and pulling her out her red bikini.
Layla exited the bedroom, shutting the door behind her. "Oh, John B!" Layla called, exiting the room. Instead, she was met by JJ in the living room.
"Where are your keys?" he questioned.
"Kitchen table," Layla responded. "Where's John B?"
"Waxing the boards," JJ explained. He looked at her quizically.
Layla nodded. "Kie and I need shirts."
JJ knitted his eyebrows together. "Why do you need shirts?" A small smirk was on his face; he would much prefer that they didn't wear shirts.
"So our bodies don't stick to the board?" Layla explained back to the boy. "The same reason you guys wear rashguards?"
"Oh," JJ realized, "Just grab it out of his drawer. He doesn't care."
"I have to ask first," Layla stated, laughing lightly.
JJ rolled his eyes, grabbing a navy blue t-shirt off the couch. "Here's one of mine," he explained, throwing it in her direction. He then walked to the side, picking up a greenish shirt that read "CAPTAIN" across the front. He tossed it to her as well. "And here's one that John B probably doesn't even know he has."
Layla smiled. "Thanks, JJ."
"You better hurry up," JJ returned. "We're leaving in," he pretended to glance at a watch on his wrist, "Eight minutes. With or without you, Layla Arden."
Layla held the two shirts in her hands, heading back towards the room. "My car!" she called over her shoulder to the boy who she was distancing herself from.
