thirty-one - rides

When Layla arrived home around noon, JJ was seated on her couch.

She let out an audible sigh, before turning to exit her home in the boy's presence. He looked up, his heart panting at the girl's reaction. "What, no, Layla! Seriously?"

He rose to his feet, heading into the doorway to go after Layla.

He then spotted Rafe's car parked on the street in front of the house. Rafe seemed to be waiting for her to get in before he pulled away.

Layla simply sharply inhaled at the staring match the boys seemed to be having. Rafe simply shook his head at JJ, muttering something under his breath. He looked at Layla, waiting for some sort of indication. Layla nodded to him, knowing fully that she could handle JJ. Rafe took it as his approval to leave. Layla gave him a wave.

JJ's breath was hitched in his throat, as Layla pushed her way into the house past JJ.

"Why are you here?" Layla asked, shaking her head. She slipped off her shoes, tossing her keys in the dish by the door.

JJ gave a short, butter chuckle. "Well, you can't get ahold of you by calling you. And if I come here, it might be days before you show back up."

"Okay, well then why do you need to get ahold of me?" she questioned, walking towards the kitchen. JJ followed behind, Layla pulling her hair back into a low pony as she walked.

"I, uh..." he began, as if forgetting why he was there. Layla knew he had no valid reason. "Well, John B is worried about you. Since you haven't been to the Chateau."

Layla chuckled. "Try again." JJ appeared confused. "I love the boy, but we both know he doesn't worry about anyone else."

He inhaled deeply. Layla knew that JJ was the one worried, but he wouldn't confess that. She wouldn't either if she were him. "I forgot why I'm here."

"I'm sure you did," Layla replied, hoping for once the boy would do something unpredictable.

He stood in the doorway of the kitchen as Layla went about in the cabinets, retrieving a glass. She then took it over to the fridge, filling it was ice and then water.

"So, you and Rafe, huh?" JJ questioned. Layla was nearly praying that he didn't bring it up for his sake.

Layla simply laughed, shaking her head. She turned to him. "Are you serious right now?" She sort of expected it, but was blindsided by the stupidity of the blond boy in the room.

JJ shrugged. "I was just asking," he attempted to defend.

Layla elected to ignore his question, moving past the fact that he even asked. She knew he wasn't stupid enough to ask again.

Layla had headed up to her room about an hour and a half previously, hoping JJ would have disappeared by the time she returned back downstairs.

Rafe had text her multiple times, asking if she was sure that she was okay and if she positive that she didn't want him to come back at pick her up.

The texting turned into Snapchats. Layla elected to head downstairs, and to her delight, JJ had let himself out.

The clock read 2:43. Layla had already showered and changed her clothes when she had headed up to her bedroom. She had also brushed her hair and teeth.

She didn't have plans for the night, and she was sort of happy about it. Flora was missing in action, she felt she was beginning to bore Rafe from spending so much time with him, and she didn't really want to see JJ so going to John B's was out.

While she could handle her own company, she much preferred to be social. Since that seemed out, she decided she was going to enjoy her own company for a few hours.

This only lasted four hours. After the long four hours, which involved texting Kiara about JJ showing up at her house and messaging Rafe about nothing in particular, Layla decided she wanted to go for a ride.

She grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and her keys out of the dish by the front door. Layla looked the front door behind her, unlocking her car.

She wore a windbreaker over her cropped tank top, as well as some loose fitting shorts. The clock read 6:45, and it was still sunny outside. The sunlight was beginning to dim.

Layla locked her doors after entering the vehicle, turning on the car. She began getting situated by bucking her seatbelt, adjusting the climate, and turning on her "vibes" playlist.

She pulled out of the driveway and onto the street, unsure of where the drive would take her. She had a lot on her mind, and she figured driving away from her house was the best way to clear it.

She reached the main strip of highway in just about fifteen minutes, it leading her up the island. Before she got onto the main strip, she elected to stop for gas.

Layla pulled up to the gas pump, popping the gas tank. She exited the vehicle after shutting it off and retrieving her keys. Immediately behind her, she locked the car.

With her wallet in tow, she headed into the gas station. Upon spotting all of the snacks, she had realized she hadn't eaten. She spotted a small bag of pretzels, grabbing it off of the shelf. As she turned to head to the register, a boy who appeared about her age joined her in the aisle.

"Uh, miss?" he questioned, glancing at her. She hesitated for a moment as if he wasn't talking to her.

She turned to him, looking expectantly.

"Your, uh, shoe is untied," he explained, pointing down at her white sneaker. Layla glanced down, about to mutter a "thank you." Instead the boy, his hands empty, bent down. "You know, I've got it."

He put one knee to the ground before Layla could react. Her cheeks heated up as she stood in the aisle waiting for the strange boy to finish tying her shoe.

He rose back to his feet, Layla glancing at him. She had never seen him before. He was wearing a long-sleeve black shirt, and gray cloth shorts. A backwards baseball hat sat on his head. "Um, thank you," Layla stated, as he stood across from her.

He gave her a nod. "Couldn't have you falling for anyone else."

Layla's jaw dropped slightly at his words. His face fell at her shocked reaction. She could tell from his demeanor and slight accent that he had just moved here, or he was simply a tourist. She did admire his confidence regardless.

"You're bold," she stated, giving him a small nod.

He smiled in reply. "I'm Colton." His eyes were blue and he had dusty brown hair.

"I'm Layla."
