{ chapter eleven ~ as we ride into battle }

Mila slouched on the cracked stone table, her hands running through her hair. Her facial expression remained the same. A monotonous one. She was bored, bored as she waited for the army and her husband to leave. Then she could leave. She had devised a plan. Well, Edmund has devised her plan, and if she was honest, it was a pretty well thought out plan! That's the duo they were, he was the planner and they were both the do-ers...

"We'll be back before you know it," Peter said as he sat beside his wife, a hand resting on her shoulder. "Don't wait up for us, my love, we'll be alright." Mila smiled, her smile completely covering her devious smirk as she turned to her husband. "Just promise me you'll stay safe Pete? Be rational." She told him as she planted a kiss upon his lips. "I'll be alright, as long as you are safe. Which I'll know, because you'll be here." He told her, kissing her forehead before he began to gather his troops. Edmund joined her side shortly after. They sat in comfortable silence for a few moments before the younger boy quickly looked around. "There's a gryphon waiting around the far side, he'll bring you to my post and will leave at this signal," Edmund said as he began flashing his new torch. "If you're not there when the signal is flashed, he will leave Mila. So be there or Peter will find out you disobeyed his 'orders' and we wouldn't want to find out what the Magnificent Peter Pevensie will do, do we?" He said, a chuckle escaping both their lips. "Promise me you'll stay safe, especially when the battle begins. I know you Mi, you'll get caught up in the battle and we'll be out of each other's sight." Edmund whispered as a few Centaurs drew nearer. "I promise." She whispered, her arms wrapping around the boy, just as Peter called the remaining army members. She smiled, "Now go, Narnia needs their best swordsman." He smirked, "I knew I was the best." The young queen groaned, "Man! Edmund. SwordsMAN!" She shouted as she watched him join his brother and the Narnians.

The Hopeful Queen's dark eyes followed the figure of another Queen, a Gentle one. "Oh, Su!" She shouted, causing her dear friend to join her. "We need a catch-up when you return. I've missed our weekly picnic gossip about your potential suitors. So, when you return we'll be having something similar and you can tell me all about Caspian!" She said in a hushed voice so only she and Susan could hear. She watched as the girl grew a deep red. Mila chuckled, "Now go, I'll be waiting for you when you return." The Hopeful Queen waited patiently as she watched the army pile out.

Her dark hair tumbled down her back as she pulled on an armour plate over her khaki dress.  "I knew you would go." Lucy Pevensie's voice came from the darkness. "Promise me you won't tell," Mila said, not even having to look at the child as she grasped her sword. "They should have called you Queen Mila the Adventurous." Mila chuckled as she finally turned to the girl. "You know me Lu, I wouldn't miss a chance to save my kingdom." Lucy wrapped her small arms around the older girl's torso, "You're going to stay here when we leave again, aren't you?" Her breath caught in her throat as the girl spoke. She stuttered slightly, not knowing exactly what to say. "I saw the way you looked at this place when we returned, Narnia wasn't the same, but it was still home. Especially to you." Mila smiled. "And in Finchley, I hadn't seen that Queen Mila smile Peter always spoke about." The Hopeful Queen held the girl tighter. "Are you going to stay when we leave?" Mila looked down at the girl, "I'm not sure Lu, maybe if Tumnus and Orious and the Beavers were still here, it would possibly be definite, but you, Peter, Ed and Su are the only family I have left." Mila gently kissed the girl's forehead before she climbed onto the Gryphon. "Oh and Lu, can this be our little secret, Peter and I have argued enough already." As the older Queen prepared to fly away to join Edmund, she saw Lucy seal her mouth and pretend to throw away the key. Her secret was definitely saved with the littlest Pevensie.

With the wind blowing through her hair and the moon reflecting the whole solar system in her eyes she soared across the new Narnia. With the Telmarine castle up ahead guiding her way, she swooped higher, knowing the army, Peter, Susan and Caspian would be close. And she didn't want to be seen. Above the clouds and left in silence, no sound of the wind or rushing rivers she was left alone to her thoughts. Thoughts of the battle, of Peter, of staying in Narnia when the Pevensies returned to Finchley. When and if. She had the decision to make. But she pushed that thought towards the back of her head as she swooped beneath the crispy clouds and down towards the cold stone of the dark castle.

She landed beside Edmund with ease, "Your late." He simply said as he fiddled with his torch. "Had a small run in with Lucy. Don't worry, my secrets are safe with her. I trust her." Edmund turned to the girl as the two of them watched the Gryphon soar away. "Are you ready?" He asked her, a devious smirk on his face, a similar one to the Queens. The two always wore a smirk before the battle. It showed bravery, according to the two, their weaknesses were hidden behind their brave faces. "More than ready." She replied as she looked over the large wall, she could spy the army in the distance. "Let's do this."
