{ chapter twelve ~ little Edmund Pevensie }
The night was young when Mila Jones heard the quiet whispers of the small army returning. They seemed happy, accomplished even. Mila almost pulled a muscle at how fast she jumped from her bed. It was still dark outside, the moon causing the camp to have an eerie but stunning light as it showed itself to all of the tents. Almost as if the moon was showing off.
One thing was different from the army though. A small boy walked alongside them. He didn't seem like the cocky and jokey tween, Mila had met only days ago. Edmund Pevensie seemed damaged and scared. The teenager shook her head as she made her way toward the group. What exactly had the White Witch done to such a small mind? Such a small child? She guessed she would never know. Many people don't like speaking about their traumas. And Edmund didn't seem like the type of person to open up. Mila, although she didn't know him, she knew he would put on a brave face and smile when he saw his family because that was the type of person he was.
She picked up her pace slightly as Edmund and a couple of female centaurs entered a tent. Soon her hurried walk turned into a sprint. She knew the two centaurs; they were medics. A sheer river of panic flooded the girl as she got closer to the tent. She hadn't even had a real conversation with the boy, and she had already grown to worry about him as a sibling would. A few of the male centaurs that crowded around the tent bowed as they saw her coming. "May I?" She politely asked, not wanting to intrude on whatever the medics were doing. She saw Orius' smile before he nodded, signaling her to enter the tent in which the boy had resided it.
It only took her a second before she was inside the warmth of the tent. The subtle glow of the candles warmed her pale face as she flashed a nice, welcoming smile to the boy. "I don't believe we've actually been formally introduced, I'm," he had already cut her off. "Mila." The Princess suddenly became captive to the hug the small boy had given her as he eagerly held on, a sigh of relief escaping his lips. He needed comfort, a familiar face, luckily Mila could provide. The hug only got tighter as Edmund began to sob into the arms of Princess Mila. "I was so stupid." She heard him mumble. Mila ran her small hand over his back, she rubbed comforting circles. Her eyes locked with the medics, "Can we have a minute?" She whispered to the Centaurs. "Actually, I can take it from here." She told them, the two strong women smiled and bowed before leaving. Mila led the young boy to the makeshift bed, "Now, Now Ed." She whispered, "You are far from stupid!" She smiled as the boy watched over her, fear and pleading in his eyes made her worry for his wellbeing. "Your safe now." She watched as his eyes softened slightly, the fear of being alone and injured quickly flickered to those of a boy feeling safe and secure.
Mila began pouring all sorts of healing potions and things onto cotton swabs as she attempted to clear up Edmund's wounds. His bruised forehead and eyelid were a lost cause, she couldn't heal them, only time could. His bleeding lip and cheek however were quickly washed clean of all grime and dirt. She brushed the cotton swab over his lip lightly, the alcohol causing him to wince. "Sorry." She mumbled. "Why are you being so nice to me?" Edmund abruptly asked. "I've caused nothing but trouble." Mila shook her head. "You were scared of the unknown Edmund. The White Witch has abilities to make you feel safe and secure in new lands. Especially if you've never been here before. You didn't know who was good, or who was bad and she manipulated you." She wiped the small tear that had dropped from his dark eyes. "What about Peter? Is he going to forgive me? And Susan and Lu?" The young girl gave him a comforting smile. "Peter hasn't stopped since you left. He's constantly wondering if you're okay. He cares about your safety. Even if you two fight, he's still your big brother. Your big, overprotective brother. And your sisters, although at times it may not seem like they love you. It may not seem that you are being included or thought of, but you're always going to be their brother. You're always going to be wanted and needed and protected." Edmund smiled. "I've missed them. Even Peter's stupid face." She chuckled as she ruffled Edmund's already messy hair. "Get some sleep Kiddo. You have a big day tomorrow."
She watched as the boy jumped under the covers of the makeshift bed. "Goodnight Edmund." She whispered as she blew out four of the five candles. "Mila?" She heard his sleepy voice call out, as she made her way to the exit. "Can you stay? Just until I fall asleep?" She nodded before curling up on the small armchair beside the bed. A comforting silence took over for a while before Edmund spoke up once more. "I'm frightened that I'm going to open my eyes and be tied to that tree again. Or I'm going to be shivering and chained in that icy dungeon." Mila glanced over to the boy, whose eyes were still wide. "You will never have to go through anything, like that ever again, Edmund. I promise." She heard him sigh. "Promise me you'll try and get some sleep? I'll even wake you if you'd like? So you see a familiar face." She watched him nod as sleep finally came to him. "Goodnight Mila." She heard him say before the silent snores welcomed the tent. "Sweet dreams Ed." She mumbled before closing her eyes.
