~A Near Death Experience~"I s-swear I don't know how I got that." David remained still as his mom inspected his arm. I stayed silent waiting for her to turn to me. She was tense I could tell just by her shoulders.
David's dad hummed. "Does it hurt?"
"No! I didn't even notice I had it." David stuttered, surprised at how he had the strange bruises.
David's mom brushed a hand across his neck. "You have more on your neck are you sure this didn't happen at-"
David cut his mom off and swatted her hand away angrily. " No! (Y/N) has them too!"
With a sigh, David's mom turned toward me and inspected the strange marks around my arms. I forced a smile though I was just as confused as to how I'd gotten them. "The marks are pretty similar." David's mom confirmed gently turned my head to check my neck as well. "You don't have any on your neck." I pressed my hand against my bare neck wishing I had some type of mirror to check.
"I think they look cool." Nina chuckled, lightning the tense mood.
"Nina." Her mom gave her a stern look. "David I'm taking you to the doctor tonight. (Y/N) I'm gonna tell your dad what happened and let him decide what he wants to do."
"Oh, no need! I'm fine really..." I reassured her not wanting to bother my dad at work. She shook her head and grabbed her phone stepping into the hallway. I sighed and dropped my eyes down to my uneaten breakfast.
David tugged his shirt back on and nudged me. "I'm sure we're both fine. It's probably poison ivy or something." I nodded though I knew that wasn't true and fixed my shirt. David's mom's muffled voice drifted through the silent kitchen. I picked up my spoon, finally able to eat my soggy cereal.
"Daddy. I know who left the marks on David and (Y/N)!" Sofia grinned, pointing her spoon at David.
David hummed swallowing his food. "Who?"
"The shadow." She deadpanned staring straight at David and I. We glanced at each other, our eyes equally wide.
"Sofia..." David's dad pushed himself up from the barstool and ruffled Sofia's hair. "The things you say..."
Nina giggled beside me and tickled my side. "The shadow...the one that lives in the basement where the old cemetery was!"
David gasped. "A cemetery really!?"
"Duh! They found human bones when our house was built." Nina raised a brow. I worried my lip and glanced at David's terrified face.
David's mom reentered the kitchen having finished the call with my dad. "Nina stop with the lies."
Nina pouted. "Oh come on! I was just following Sofia's fantasy." I giggled loving the feeling of being surrounded by a big family. My family had always been small so Felix and David were my extended family.
"That's enough." David's dad sighed and pulled Sofia down from her chair. "If you're done with your breakfast we need to get going." I nodded and grabbed my bowl off the table heading to the sink.
"Come on Nina." Mrs. Garcia stepped into the hallway and pulled on a jacket. "I don't want to be late."
"All right." Nina smiled and took another piece of bread with her. "Bye kiddos." She mussed David's hair and waved at me as the two of them headed out the door. With everyone out of the kitchen David sighed and flopped onto the table.
"I just want to sleep."
"I feel you," I responded and headed into the entryway. "Come on! Let's get a move on."
After forcing David out of the house and getting my bike from my garage David and I headed to school in silence. It had gotten increasingly foggy and windy over breakfast and it was impossible to see more than a couple of feet ahead of yourself. Coming up on Felix's house we slowed down seeing his dad outside.
"(Y/N)! David! What's up? Are you heading to school?" Mr. Lopez greeted us with a smile and continued to sweep the ground free of cockroaches.
"Unfortunately." David sighed. I craned my neck around Felix's dad trying to get a peek through Felix's bedroom window. Sadly, his curtains were drawn close.
"Time will pass quickly." Mr. Lopez chuckled at David's reluctance.
"I'm jealous of Felix." I giggled and rolled my shoulders back.
He glanced back at Felix's window and sighed. "He doesn't have to go to school but he still has to do housework. I'm just cleaning up these cockroaches before I head off to work. You two know how he freaks out at the sight of them."
"They are gross." David stuck out his tongue. "Anyway, we better keep going. Don't wanna be late."
"Alright. Do you guys want to come over later? Your dad is coming over to watch football." He nodded at David. "I invited your dad but he's working late." I bobbed my head expecting as much.
"I'll see if I have the energy," David mumbled and bid Mr. Lopez goodbye.
"Me too." I waved and David and I continued towards school. The cool breeze chased us through the gap of trees and across the road. "I have no idea how I got these," I muttered to David motioning to the marks on my upper arm. David glanced over his shoulder for a split second to respond but that's all it took. A car honked loudly at us and came crashing into David's bike.
David flew forward his head flipping under his legs and miraculously he landed upright on the ground. I jumped off my bike tossing it to the side and ran towards David. "David! Holy hell! Are you okay? I'm so sorry!" I squatted next to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. He didn't speak and just remained silent in shock. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and hugged his body against me trying to ignore the yellow glow in his normally amber eyes.
"Fucking hell!" A man stepped out of the car that hit David and violently slammed the door. David shivered in my arms. "Shit! This was new!" The man stepped in front of his car inspecting the cracked headlight. Seriously? He almost killed my best friend. "Fucking kids!" He kicked David's bike and stormed up behind him. I helped David off the ground as he rubbed his back still shaken up. "Watch where you're going!" The man shouted, hanging his hands from his belt loops.
I glared over David's shoulder at the man and rubbed David's shoulder comfortingly. "Are you listening to me?!" The man shouted and jogged over to David and me, grabbing David's arm violently. "Talk to me for fuck's sake!"
"Stop!" I pried the man's hand off of David but it didn't matter his demeanor instantly changed when David turned around. "We didn't see you and-" David remained silent, his doe eyes gazing up at the man as I argued with him.
"You two are right! I should have had my lights on." He clasped his hands together his entire demeanor changing in less than a second. "Are you hurt?"
David raised his hands and shook his head. "Oh, no...I'm okay just a bit freaked out."
"But you are hurt!" He grabbed David's arms and pulled up his sleeves to reveal the bruising.
"No need! I'm really fine!" David pleaded glancing over at me.
I grabbed the man's arms trying to get him to let go of David. "Please stop! He said he's fine!" If only Felix was here he'd know what to do.
"No, no. He needs to see a doctor. You can stay here." He violently pushed me to the ground. David continued to struggle against the man as an odd sense of deja vu consumed me. I wanted to protect David but yet again I was helpless.
Footsteps approached the three of us from the fog. "What's going on here Boss
