It's around twelve-thirty in the morning when (Y/N) first begins to regret working the night shift. She's bored out of her mind. The convenience store is empty, pretty typical given it's so early on a Monday, but being alone is nonetheless unsettling. Despite priding herself on being strong for her size, she isn't sure how she'd fare if push came to shove.
(Y/N) sighs and rests her head against her arms. Ever since she'd started working night shifts, her sleep schedule had been fucked and rest was no longer an option during 'night hours'.
Fluorescent lights illuminated the line of lone gas pumps in the Seven-Eleven parking lot, a couple shamelessly flicker off and on, seizure-inducing, but that's not the problem... not even a trucker is filling up his tank... (Y/N) fishes out her phone to check the time again. It's only been a minute. "Seriously..." She mumbles.
The manager wouldn't mind if she had a Slurpee, would he? (Y/N) dug out her wallet and shoved a bill into the register. Instead of walking around the counter (Like a normal person) she hops over it and heads straight to the machine. Anything with sugar would do, just something to keep her awake.
Flavor...Flavor... She tapped her finger along the glass, pulling out one of the jumbo cups. "Banana? Since when did we get a banana flavor?"
A shrug later she figures she's in the mood for something fruity. The bottom half of her cup ends up being strawberry lemonade and the top, blue raspberry. After snapping on a lid and shoving in a straw, she takes a long sip. Her lips smack around the straw, but the store is quiet, and she doesn't care.
The feeling of eyes on her straightens her back. Goosebumps raise on her exposed arms, but the chills aren't from the cool Slurpee. "And now I'm hallucinating..." She giggles almost drunkenly to herself and returns to her post.
For the next ten minutes, she swipes through her friends Snapchat stories, laughing softly when she finds something funny and sipping her blue raspberry-strawberry lemonade creation. A certain video stops her finger and reminds her of what she's missing. A couple of girls from her college she's familiar with dance across the screen, clinking their beer bottles against each other and laughing loudly to the thump of music.
A frat party. On one hand, (Y/N)'d rather be anywhere but working, but loud music and dancing didn't sound very appealing, never had. She takes a swig of her Slurpee, glad it's not anything intoxicating. Her chair tips slightly when she stretches back with a yawn, her eyes slipping closed.
Then, the door chimes and a man strolls in.
(Y/N) drinks his figure in, the way his skinny jeans hug his thighs, and how his dark hair perfectly frames his jaw. He takes in the store, ultimately meeting eyes with (Y/N). She sucks in an apprehensive breath. "Um, hi?" Her voice is tight and a few octaves higher than normal.
He blinks slowly, letting a few more awkward moments pass. Then he stumbles for words. "Oh-uh, hey..." And wow, his voice is like music to her ears. Never has she heard a voice so deep, so velvety and smooth. (Y/N) gulps and leans forward in her seat, almost like his voice is drawing her closer.
"Can I help you?" Forcing her heart to calm is hard, but she manages. The man raises a brow, looking her over. God, he's just- (Y/N) sucks in another breath and breaks eye contact with him. He seems out-of-place, lost maybe.
He cracks his knuckles. "Hungry." The words are mumbled, barely legible. The gorgeous man tries again. "I'm hungry."
Her eyebrows furrow. Confused, she looks out the Seven-Eleven window for a car, someone he came here with. But there are no cars. So he walked...? There are no apartments or houses near, so the fact he'd been walking alone was concerning. She opens her mouth to ask if he's in trouble. If he's being chased or threatened, but he cuts her off. "I'm- I'm fine!" His face flushes and he coughs awkwardly, bringing down his hands. "Just hungry."
