“Does this bullet vest make me look fat?” I ask Ashton giggling. He laughs at me as I give him a twirl.
“No black is very slimming on you, now would you two please hurry up.” Harry says sitting on a chair with his feet up on a desk. He looks so cool in his black combat boots and all black attire, mind you Ashton looks a lot more convincing as a soldier with his muscular body. We’re currently in a small room that looks like the uniform issuing office with the desk and shelves of folders. A small window above head height lets in a hint of morning sun giving the room little lighting.
“Okay I’m done.” I announce. Harry lets out a chuckle getting up from his seat and walks towards me.
“Your utility belt is on upside down batman.” He says reaching both arms around my torso to unclip it. Our bodies are inches away as Harry pretty much hugs me and I can see Ashton out of the corner of my eye looking at us. Finally Harry re-adjusts my belt and reaches back into his own belt to pull out a hand gun. He gives it to me and smiles, his emerald green eyes staring into my soul. I swallow hard and take the gun from him.
“Thanks.” I say, my voice noticeably wonky. I look over at Ashton who has turned back to tying his boots up, obviously trying to ignore what just happened.
“I HAVE IT!” Calum yells bursting through the door. I fall straight off my seat and Ashton has his gun up and ready.
“Fucking hell!” I curse as I prop myself back up on the chair. Calum lets out an awkward laugh as he apologises. Harry walks out of the uniform warehouse that backs onto the office we are situated in.
“Here are the walky talkies and your helmets. I’ll hold onto ours.” Harry says to me referring to the walky talky. I nod and take the shiny black helmet off of him wiping the dust off the tinted visor.
“Okay, so I have some good news and some bad news.” Calum announces and we all stare at him in anticipation. “The bad news it everyone is tracked by a number in here now instead of their names. This just makes it easier to handle having one number seventy eight instead of twenty guys named John Smith, if you get what I mean. The good news is that I have the records of who was captured and brought in on the exact same day as your brother Essie. The only thing is we have to figure out which one he is out of the forty numbers on the list. I’ve figured out that about half of them are in sector 9, which is the training facility on the eastern border, while the other half are in the cages in sector 3, which is on the western boarder.”
“The cages?” I ask.
“Yeah they call the ‘prison’ part of the compound that. It’s where all the uncontrollable and non-participating go to pretty much starve until they beg to be put back into their training regime… or die of course.”
“Nice…” Ashton comments rubbing the back of his neck.
“Well I just hope Luke is in sector 9. Thanks for that Calum, I really appreciate it!” I say giving him a small hug. “So what now?”
“We split up and find your brother!” Harry replies.
