"OK SPADES ARE YOU GUYS READY FOR THE GAMES?!" Shirubia exclaimed enthusiastically.
We were all sitting in the living room for a short meeting before the Games started. We still had a few hours before it took place; the moon was just breaking through a few clouds. Rubi and Shirubia wanted to make sure we were all ready mentally after the argument yesterday. Nik was laying on the staircase flipping an arrow while Mindi was doing the same with a knife as she sat on the railing. Rora was lounging on the couch while Seshy was sitting up straight and proper, listening to Shirubia. Eriya was propped up on a wall next to Mindi questioning how she could twirl the knife so fast. I was getting juice from the fridge before the meeting started.
"It's time for the Games to begin Spades," spoke Rubi in a strong, but tired voice. "We all have been working hard and I feel like the odds aren't as against us this time; however, we still aren't expected to win by the public. Shirubia and I have tips for you all before the Games. Shi go ahead."
"Shirubia ain't shy at all," I laughed.
"That's one of her nicknames, dummy. You don't remember?" Mindi gibed.
"Oh yeah."
"Go on Shirubia," Mindi sighed.
"OK SUPER DUPER QUICK: DON'T FORGET YOUR TASK AT HAND. IF YOU FORGET THAT, YOU WILL JUST BE RUNNING AROUND TRYING NOT TO GET KILLED.."
"Yes. That's good, Shi. Also, stay vigilant, always, because there is no telling where the other team will spawn. They may spawn the length of the playing field away from you or they could spawn right next to you."
We all looked at Rubi and nodded in comprehension.
"Ok well that's all we have for now," Rubi said with a small smile. "We have been stressing the occasion for the past few weeks. You know what to do. Go to your rooms and wait until the Games' portals open. They will open at midnight. Good luck Spades. You are all dismissed. Except Ari."
I was just finishing my drink when Rubi said that everyone could leave but me.
"Oooooooooooh you're in trouble," teased Nik.
"Grow up, Nik," Rora combated, nudging him forward. "Act your age."
"Oh my bad for trying to tease your boyfriend, Rora. It won't happen again."
"I promise you by God's grace if you ever say that again," Rora raised her fist at Nik, making him flinch, "I will kill you and Rubi won't be able to bring you back. Ain't that right, Rubi."
Rubi changed her gaze from me and looked at Rora. "You already know, girl. Sisters before Misters."
"Rubi I'm your bro—"
"Laaallalalaaala," Rora chanted trying to block Nik out. "She can't hear you. Just go upstairs. Rubi needs to talk to Ari."
Rora and Nik were the last ones up the stairs so now it was just me and Rubi. Rubi didn't say a word. She just stared at me with her gaping eyes for a while. I tried to avoid eye contact because I was becoming uncomfortable.
"Ari," she whispered softly.
I never heard my name said so softly before. Her words so delicately fell from her mouth that it seemed to just fall on the floor. I couldn't help but look at her now. Her voice was so commanding but so gentle at the same time. It simply baffled me. I slowly looked up into her deep blue eyes.
"Ari. I'm sorry about yesterday for snapping at you. It's just I was so fed up with the fighting in the House. I wanted all of us to get along. I've been working so hard for years to make this House great. We have been picked on and mocked since I started it. They said we were inferior and too young and too stupid and too weak to do anything great. I...want to be great. I want all of us to be great. I want you to be great."
