The First Cut Is the Deepest

Even though I had only been working here at the hospital for not even a month yet, I'd say I was probably the favorite doctor around. I guess it like the saying, 'treat people the way you want to be treated.'

I noticed Meredith standing with the other interns, waiting for their rounds to begin. "How's that hunt for our roommates? Need some help." I asked and Christina, Gorge and Izzy looked at me before staring at Meredith shocked.

"You are living with an attending. Not just an 'attending' but the queen of cardio?" Christina exclaimed and I chuckled, leaning against the nurse's station.

"She's my sister, of course I'm living with her." Meredith explained and I nodded.

"I think Izzy and George would be great housemates." I said and Meredith glared at me as I walked away towards the attending lounge to change into my scrubs.

I stood by the elevator, reading through a patient's chart when someone beside me coughed a bit obnoxiously. I looked sideways and rolled my eyes noticing Derek, with a big smile plastered on his face. "Seattle has ferryboats." Derek mentioned and I smiled softly.

Humming in agreement, I asked "Yes?" Knowing it was a ploy to possibly ask me out again.

"I didn't know that. I've been living here six weeks. I didn't know there were ferryboats." Derek stated and I rolled my eyes not really believing him.

"I've been living here six weeks as well and I know this. Seattle is surrounded by water on three sides." I explained.

"Hence the ferryboats. Now I have to like it here." Derek said as the elevator ding and the doors opened. "I wasn't planning on liking it here. New York is way different. We are genetically engineered to dislike everywhere, except Manhattan." Derek expressed as we stepped into the elevator. I pressed the button before Derek pressed another one. I chuckled nodding slightly in agreement, he wasn't lying.

"I have a thing for ferry boats." Derek said and I chuckled before glancing anywhere but at him.

"I'm not going out with you." I stated clearly even though he didn't ask.

"Did I ask you to go out with me?" Derek asked glancing over his shoulder at me before turning to the front again. "Do you want to go out with me?" Derek asked again and I could see the edges of his lips curl up into a smile.

"I'm not dating you, and I'm definitely not sleeping with you again." I proclaimed in annoyance that he won't just let it go. "You are still technically married, remember? Just forget about it." I exclaimed again. Derek turned towards me, a sad look in his eyes that made me think he actually, maybe wanted more with me, but he couldn't. We couldn't. "Look, I'm drawing a line. The line is drawn. There's a big line." I said nodding to myself.

"So, this line, is it imaginary, or do I need to get you a marker?" Derek asked while facing me. I scoffed and before I could stop myself, I was dropping my files and pushing him against the wall while my lips attacked his. He swapped us holding me still before I swapped us again. We heard the elevator dinged causing us to pull away quickly as I started picking up my files. I walked out of the elevator signing to myself. Idiot, I yelled in my head. "We'll talk later?" I heard Derek yell, but I just continued to walk away, fast.

------------------------------

The day carried on, and I barely saw Derek the rest of it. We had the occasionally staring contest from across the hospital. He'd smile and I'd send me a slight wave before bolting basically, in the other direction. It came to the afternoon and there was no avoiding him because we were doing a surgery together. Burke, Derek and I all scrubbed in before entering the OR.
